"I just need to grab something and check on Raven."
"No problem."
It was getting dark by the time Markus pulled up in front of the darkened house.
They exited the vehicle and made their way up to the front door.
Once inside, they went upstairs to his room. Raven was sitting on his bed, facing the door. Her yellow eyes stayed on them as they entered bedroom. Markus picked her up in his arms.
"Did you miss me, girl?" Raven rubbed her head against his chest while purring contentedly.
While Markus was preoccupied, Mitchell went the trunk to grab his book. He put it into his bag before walking over to his bed to sit down.
"I guess she found a new owner that she likes." Mitchell said when Raven refused to leave Markus's arms.
He watched as Markus looked down at Raven silently for a few seconds, then he held her out towards him.
Mitchell took her from him, cradling her body.
"I hope you don't think I've abandoned you?"
"She doesn't think that."
Mitchell smiled up at him, shaking his head. "She likes you more than me. I think she hangs out with my mom."
"That just shows they have good taste." Markus said laughing in amusement.
Mitchell opened his mouth to respond when he felt a familiar chill in the air. Malachi appeared in the corner of the room, watching them.
"Well, look who finally decided to show up." Malachi came closer to stand next to the bed, all the while staring at Markus.
Raven stiffened in his arms, and hissed at Malachi.
"She's quite protective of him."
Mitchell knew he couldn't talk to him while Markus was in the room.
"Do you mind feeding her?" He handed Raven to Markus. "There's cat food down in the kitchen."
"No, I don't mind at all." Markus left the room with Raven.
Mitchell turned to face Malachi. "I've been busy."
"He's getting more and more handsome." Malachi gave him a mischievous grin. "And more enticing."
"I haven't seen you lately. What have you been up to?" Mitchell asked, ignoring his teasing words.
"I've been watching dear Uncle Thomas."
"How is that possible? I thought you were bound to this place."
Malachi let out a sigh, "I haven't been completely honest with you."
"What do you mean? What else did you hid from me?"
"I know that Elder Clarence told you about my curse. I thought that was justified."
"It was. I would have done the same thing, if I was in your position."
Malachi didn't say anything for a moment then he let out another sigh, this time longer.
"I knew you were going to move here, to Pine Crest."
Mitchell was surprised as he heard this. Not even his mom had known until she was informed seven months ago.
"How did you know?"
"Although I'm not technically alive, I still have my powers."
Mitchell stared at him, "What did you do?"
"I didn't do anything. It's more of what I know." Malachi walked to his spot at the window. "I knew about Markus years ago when I was in the land of the living. He's very important to all of us."
"Did you saw him in a premonition?"
"Yes. I had dreams about him before I died. Initially, I thought he was someone I would be with."
Mitchell's stomach recoil at the idea of Markus being intimate with anyone other than him. Whether it was centuries ago or in the present.
Malachi looked at him with a small smile. "Don't worry, there's no need to get jealous."
"That night in the bedroom, you knew who Markus was, but pretended not to know. Why?"
"Because I know what he is. I know everything."
Mitchell glanced at the door to make sure it was still closed.
"You warned me about your Uncle Thomas. What would happen if he finds out about Markus?"
"Nothing good. And you could lose Markus."
Mitchell stopped his pacing to face Malachi. He walked up to him, anger coursing through his body. He didn't like the way he just said that.
"How am I going to lose him?"
"I'm sure you have already met a few of your rivals. Cassie and Lucas are still around. Tim has been silent but I have the feeling he's still obsessed with Markus."
Mitchell really didn't need to be reminded about those three at the moment.
"That still doesn't explain..."
"If you're not fully mated with him, that gives the others a chance to mate with him."
"His birthday is in three days."
"You better hope nothing goes wrong until then."
"Why didn't you tell me about this earlier?"
"I wanted to be wrong."
Mitchell picked up his bag, before turning to Malachi. "I'll be staying over at Markus's house until his birthday. Then I want you to follow me to find Elder Clarence."
"Why?"
"We have a lot to talk about."
Mitchell left his bedroom without waiting for Malachi to reply, and headed downstairs.
Markus was sitting with Raven on his lap. "How was your talk?"
Mitchell stopped in his tracks, staring at him. "How did you know?"
Markus looked up at him, "I'm not a human Mitchell. I can sense there was someone in the room with us."
Mitchell searched his face, for what, he didn't know.
"What were you talking about?" Markus got up, still holding Raven in his arms. "Was it about me?"
Mitchell didn't see the point in lying to him. "Yes, we were talking about you."
Markus stared at him, "Okay. I won't ask you any more questions until you're ready to tell me."
"I will tell you everything when I get all the information."
"Do you want to walk with her?"
Mitchell looked down at a sleeping Raven. "Will it be a problem?"
"No, I'm enjoying her company."
"Then, I would like to take her with me." Mitchell made sure the door was secured before they walked down to the car.
"Kev called while you were upstairs."
"What did he say?"
"Nothing important. He was just checking on me."
Mitchell saw the dark blue vehicle parked across the road, it was the same vehicle he saw a couple of nights ago. He had totally forgotten about it, since he hadn't seen it again.
"Someone you know?" Markus asked.
"No, I don't know that vehicle."
"I think we're being followed."
Markus didn't spare a glance in the direction of the vehicle.
"What are we going to do?"
"For now, nothing."
