"Mavka? Female spirit?"
"I'm impressed with your knowledge of folklore."
Markus scoffed at her, he had read about her in class. Mavkas were temptress figures with long Raven hair that lure men to their deaths.
"Why am I here in this place?"
"They want to test you."
Markus looked around the room then back at her. "Don't you usually kill males. Why haven't you tried to me?"
She shrugged her shoulders at him with a smile, her black eyes staring at him. Markus returned her stare unblinkingly.
She didn't want to kill him.
"How can I escape from this place?"
"You're already halfway there."
"What do you plan to do? Help me or hinder me?"
"Why don't you ask your protector?"
"Protector?"
Mavka looked down at Raven. "Why don't you show him your true form?"
Raven blinked her yellow eyes up at him then walked across the room.
He watched her stretched her body forward before transforming into human. He quickly averted his gaze when she stood naked in front of him.
"A little warning next time." Markus twisted around so his back was to her.
"You can look now."
Markus turned around to get a good look at Raven. She had covered her body with a stola. Thick black curly hair framed her fae-like face.
"You're a Feline-shifter."
"You don't look surprised. Did you know all along?" Raven tilted her head to the side, watching him. Her green almond eyes still retained its cat-like elongated pupils.
"No, I just had a feeling."
Raven smiled at him and Markus's gaze moved back and forth between the two females. He hoped that he wouldn't be getting an extra protector. He had more than enough.
"Mavka, don't flirt with him. He has a mate."
"That sucks." Mavka said smiling at him. Her long red nails tapped his cheek. "He smells delicious. Truly a son of Ilion."
"How do you two know each other?"
"We met years ago."
Markus nodded his head then turned to face the door. He lightly ran his hand over the wood, feeling a slight pulsing against his palm.
"What is this pulsing?"
"Can you really feel it?" Raven asked.
"Yeah, it's like a heat against my hand."
"Is it burning you?"
Markus shook his head. "It's almost soothing."
"Have your body ever felt like it was on fire?" Mavka asked staring at him with her eerie eyes. Black pupils ringed with red.
"A couple of times."
"How did you cool yourself down?"
"You don't need to know that information."
No way was he going to tell her his personal business.
"I guess your mate can handle your hunger."
Markus's gaze went to Mavka's and she smiled at him. He frowned at her, not liking the way she was watching him. Like she was privy to some kind of secret that he knew nothing about.
"What do you mean?"
"Markus Graves, your powers are mixing together causing your body to overheat. That hunger you're feeling for your mate is only going to get worse."
"No, it won't. I'm feeling normal."
"You bit him, didn't you?" Mavka gave him a leery smile.
Markus could feel that familiar burning behind his eyes as he stared at her. He closed his eyes trying to calm himself from lounging at her.
He didn't like her talking about it.
"Mavka, stop it. Don't make it worse."
"You're really gorgeous with that eye color. It's like a blinding red, full of suppressed power."
Markus could feel the burning heightening until he had to open his eyes with a loud growl. He dropped to his knees, hands holding his head, wrestling with whatever was happening to him.
"Markus, it's okay. Don't fight it. Let it out."
Raven's voice was a dull roar in his head. He took a deep breath, allowing that burning to consume his whole body. When he could tolerate the heat, he stood up and turned to the door. Holding out his hands, he pressed them against the door for second before the wood was engulfed in flames.
The wood burned, creating a hole big enough for him to fit through. He pulled his hand away from the door then stepped back.
"Well, that was unexpected." Mavka said stepping out of his way.
"Markus, you need to cool off before you burn the place down." Raven warned him.
Markus looked down at his hands, they seemed normal but the tips of his fingers were red.
"How do I get rid of the heat?"
"Think of a way to cool down."
"How?"
"Raven let him be. He looks really hot that way."
"Mavka, he's too young for you."
"Age is nothing but a number."
"His mate isn't going to like it. So stay away from him. He has enough problems dealing with all those creatures chasing after him."
"He keeps giving off these sex pheromones. Any human or Supernatural creature would want to have him for themselves."
"His mom is half Succubus. What did you expect?"
"Can you guys stop talking about me like I'm not standing right in front of you?" Markus changed his position so he was facing the two and glared at them.
"Look, he's almost back to normal."
"His eyes are still red."
"He looks sexier with red eyes. More yummy."
Markus shook his head. "There's a way out now." He didn't know what waited for him on the other side but he stepped through the burned out hole into another darkened hallway.
Raven and Mavka following closely behind him.
"No one has ever made it this far."
"Were you this partial to the others? Or just Markus?" Raven asked Mavka.
"He carries his father's blood."
"Is that really the reason? Or is it because he's a hybrid. More powerful than you are."
Markus stopped walking to look at her because he wanted to hear her answer to that question.
"It's actually all three reasons. But I can't kill him either way. He's important to us."
"I've been hearing this for almost my whole life but yet no one wants to explain anything to me."
"Only your parents can explain this to you."
