Maria was in my year. We are both college second years and I've had a few classes with her. She came to class always in full goth makeup and clothes. I was honestly in awe of her look whenever I saw her. She was and is still, so gorgeous. Anyways, last quarter we had Econ together and that's when I saw things change in Maria.
One class she came in late and I didn't even recognize her until she spoke to answer a question. She had on zero makeup, her hair was tied up in a bun that it looked like she had slept on, and she had on a black hoodie and grey sweats. Her eyes had dark circles under them and she looked sad, no not sad, more empty I guess. She had missed last weeks class, the one before this so I wondered what had happened. After class I went to the bathroom and when I came out of the stall she was washing her hands.
" Maria, right?" I asked.
" Yeah." She said. " What's up?"
" I just, I noticed your attire and I thought I should ask if you were okay?" I asked.
" Frankly, that's none of your business." She said and walked out.
I felt a little hurt but I knew something was wrong though because she was always so nice when we saw each other in a hallway or in a class even though we hadn't spoken much.
The next time I saw her in class she came and sat by me.
" Hey, I'm sorry I was rude to you the other day. I was having a bad day." She said still dressed down.
" It's okay. I know we aren't friends or anything but here's my number." I said and wrote it on a piece of paper for her. " You can always call if you need someone to talk to."
She nodded and took the paper. We then dropped the topic and started to get into the classes material.
After that I didn't see Maria for a week, but on the night it became a week, my phone rang.
" Hello?" I answered.
" Hey, it's, uh, it's Maria." She said.
" Hi Maria, what's going on?" I asked as I heard her sobbing.
" Can I tell you even if it's bad?" She asked.
" Of course, just talk to me." I said trying to reassure her.
" I relapsed into self harm and I'm just a mess and I can't anymore Gigi. I just don't think I can stand it and I am so low that I would call and put my problems onto you, someone I've spoken to only barely. I'm sorry, I should hand up." She rambled while crying into the phone.
" No, don't hang up. Talk to me Maria. Do you need a hospital?" I asked.
" Yeah, yeah I think so." She said.
" Okay what's your address, I'll come get you and bring you to the hospital. Put pressure on it till then okay?" I said.
" Okay." She said and gave me her address. Turns out she lived just a couple miles away from me so I got to her quick.
I knocked on the door and she opened it and closed it behind her. She was hyperventilating and crying still so I let her put her arm around me to hold some of her weight.
" You're gonna be okay." I said and helped her into my car before speeding off to the E.R.
When we arrived I helped her out of the car and into the E.R. where I yelled for help. Nurses came and took her back and one of them told me to sit and wait in the waiting room so that's what I did.
Eventually a nurse told me to come back because Maria was asking for me.
I went into her room to see her stitched up and bandaged but she still looked so broken.
" I'm glad you called." I said and I sat down next to her on a chair.
" Thank you for being there for me." She said.
" Of course. I understand how hard these things are." I said.
" You do?" She asked.
" Yes. I'm much better now though, you'll get there too." I said and she nodded in acknowledgment.
" So are they keeping you here or do you need a ride home?" I asked shyly.
" I'm allowed to go, I was already evaluated. I'd like a ride if that's okay." She said.
" Okay, and of course, that's no problem." I said.
I dropped her off and went home feeling strange. A few days later she called.
I panicked and picked up right away.
" Are you okay?" I asked.
" Yes." She said. " I just wanted to see if I could take you out to repay you for your kindness?"
I blushed but answered quickly. " Yeah sure."
" Great. How's Wednesday? Round 3:00 pm?" She asked.
" Works for me." I said.
" Perfect, I'll see you then. I'm excited." She said
" Me too." I said. " By for now."
" Bye for now." She replied and hung up.
We got lunch and went to a pottery class together and now we're together. She's much happier and back to her old self for the most part.
