" Evan!" I called to my little brother, he's not really that little any more, but I still call him that and he hates it, which makes me enjoy calling him it even more. " Mom wants me to take you to the store with me, let's go!"
He peaked out from the hallway and I could see him at the top of the stairs.
" No. I don't wanna go." He yelled at me and I was taken aback. He never yells at me unless I do something to piss him off and I didn't do anything.
He left and walked back to his room but I followed him and questioned his behavior.
" Evan, what's wrong?" I asked, but he slammed his door in my face and I heard it lock.
I slid down against the door and leaned on it.
" Evan, please talk to me, whatever it is, you can talk to me. Did I do something to you?" I asked.
" No, it's not about you." He said annoyed.
" Okay, what's it about then? Please just let me in Evan, I'm worried about you." I said.
" Fine." He said and opened the door causing me to fall back and smack my head on the hardwood.
" Ouch." I said rubbing my head.
" I let you in like you asked." He said cracking the slightest smile before it faded away.
I got up and sat next to him on his bed where he was sitting.
" Please talk to me." I said. " I won't judge you or be mad at you, just tell me what's going on."
" I want to, but I can't tell you. It's too hard." He said.
" Okay." I said looking defeated trying to think of what to say next.
" I can show you. But you have to promise you won't get scared. Do you promise?" He asked nervously.
" Yes Evan, I promise, just show me." I said.
He stood up and took off his sweatshirt revealing an entire armful of cuts, some older than others.
I promised I wouldn't be freaked out so I calmly stood up as well and pulled him into a hug while I was internally panicking.
" You're not mad?" He asked and I could feel his emotions building up.
" No Evan, I'm not mad, not one bit. I'm going to take care of you and get you some help though okay." I said still hugging him.
" Okay." He said sniffling.
" When did you last do it?" I asked.
" Like an hour ago." He said.
" Okay let's get you cleaned and bandaged then okay, that sound okay?" I asked and pulled away, looking him in the eyes.
" Yeah." He said, so I followed him to the bathroom and got out stuff to fix him up with.
As I was cleaning his arm up I asked, " You mind telling me when this started and why it's happening?"
" I just can't take mom and dad's fighting 24/7, I needed an outlet, and I know I shouldn't have done it, I know it's bad and I'm sorry, I just felt so alone." He said.
" Oh Evan, I'm so sorry you've been dealing with that all alone. I didn't know they were fighting again. You can always call me, and I know I'm at college but it's only a few hours away, so if you need to be out of the house I'll come get you, just call." I said as I was bandaging his arm.
" Really?" He asked shocked. " I thought you'd be too busy and I didn't want to bother you."
" Yes, of course. I may be busy, but I'm never too busy for you when you need me. Please call me next time instead of doing this, can you do that?" I asked.
" Yes, thank you." He said sniffling again.
" Good." I said and smiled. " And let's talk about you seeing a professional for this after dinner tonight okay?"
" Okay." He said. " Thanks for being there for me."
"I got you. Always. You're my little brother." I said and he glared at me for calling him that but hugged me anyway.
