It’s your first relationship, and Peter’s. You’ve just recently made things official. Neither of you have ever done this before, so you’re sharing a lot of firsts with each other.

The two of you are out for dessert after going for dinner. You’re at an ice cream parlor, seated at the counter, chairs squished close together. Peter gets all flustered every time your knees touch or shoulders brush. You lick a spoonful of your ice cream, humming contentedly. Your boyfriend doesn’t look too pleased with his. You nudge his knee with yours to get his attention.

“I’ve never seen someone so unhappy eating ice cream. What’s up?”

Peter chuckles, eyes downcast on his cup.

“Nothing, it’s nothing. I just… don’t really like my flavor. Kinda wish I’d gotten something else.”

He peeks up at you.

“You know how indecisive I can be.”

“That I do, Pete. Here, try mine.”

You put your spoon back in your cup and hand it to Peter. He grins and takes it from you.

“Thanks, babe.”

Peter nonchalantly digs into your ice cream, like he didn’t just call you a pet name for the first time. You’d be lying if you said your heart didn’t skip a beat. Or a couple. Your lips pull into a playful smile, head leaning into your hand.

“Babe?”

“Huh?”

“You called me babe.”

Peter laughs, but you can hear the nerves behind it.

“Oh, did I? I didn’t even realize. Must’ve just slipped out.”

Peter goes to take another spoonful of ice cream. You push the cup away, eyes meeting his.

“I want you to do it again, Pete.”

Peter’s lips form an O-shape. You give him a nod to encourage him.

“Okay… babe.”

“Thanks.”

You put the ice cream back in front of him.

“Babe.”
