Chapter Fifty-Three

The entire time the teacher was teaching you felt way more distracted than you should have. Even if Yaku had decided to show up to the art gallery on his own without being told to go, why did he lie about it? Why not just tell you the truth?

You were thankful when the bell finally rang to release you for lunch. You needed to talk to Yaku but you also couldn't just do it in front of everyone. You had tried to figure out a way to get him alone but came up with no ideas. You finally settled on the idea that you were just going to have to wait. Maybe after school you could text him and ask.

You, Kayo, and Kenma made your way over to the cafeteria to find seats at the same table you always did. A few minutes late Kuroo came to join you at the table.

"Where's Yaku?" you asked casually as Kuroo sat down without the boy tagging along. Yaku didn't always sit with you guys but he did quite often, especially lately.

"He's in the volleyball gym helping Lev practice." Kuroo answered.

You didn't know Lev very well but you knew he was a first year who had just started volleyball. You also knew that he drove Kenma crazy all the time.

You nodded to his answer and let the conversation naturally drift away from Yaku's missing presence. You did your best to pay attention to what everyone was talking about but you were extremely unfocused today.

Kuroo was telling a story about something that had happened when him and Kenma were in Miyagi over the weekend but it felt like everything he was saying was going in one ear and out the other.

"I've gotta run to the washroom, be back in a minute." you finally said after attempting to listen to another story and failing.

The others nodded as you got up. You went to the washroom and splashed a little water on your face to attempt to regain some of your lost focus. But that didn't work. Yaku had shown up not for Kayo but for you. It wasn't Kayo who knew you needed someone there but Yaku. He had said that he liked holding your hand. What did it all mean?

Finally you took a deep breath and decided to just confront what had been bothering you.

Instead of heading back to the cafeteria you made your way outside and over to the volleyball gym where you knew Yaku and Lev were practicing.

When you opened the door Yaku was lecturing Lev about something he was doing wrong repeatedly. But as you stepped into the gym you seemed to catch both boys attention. Lev smiled and waved in greeting when he saw you. But Yaku was giving you a look of surprise, not having expected you to just show up to the gym like that. What were you even doing? What was your plan? You didn't have one.

"Kayo didn't tell you to go on Friday." you said as if that were an explanation as to why you were interrupting their practice.

Why were you here?

You presence in the gym looked to make a lot more sense to Yaku now and a lot less sense to Lev. Yaku was looking at you with no words. He probably hadn't been expecting you to call him out on his lie.

"Lev why don't you go ahead and eat your lunch. We'll practice again tomorrow." Yaku said, turning to face the boy again.

"Oh wow Yaku that was a really easy practice for you! Are you getting soft?" Lev stated happily.

"I can make it harder, would you like to run laps?" Yaku exclaimed, his face furrowing a little.

Lev's expression quickly changed to fear. "Nope I'm good. Thanks for helping me!" he said before hurrying out of the gym.

You almost laughed at the control Yaku held on the team. He wasn't the captain but the team respected him a lot.

Yaku looked back over at you, his expression going a lot softer than the one he had when he was yelling at Lev.
