I went through the Lost and Found for the tenth time.
"Where is it?" I hissed through my teeth. Maddie was searching next to me, opening up lunch boxes and pouring their contents on the ground.
"Alice, I don't think it's-"
"Shut up, Madeline." I slammed my hands on the table. "It has to be here. I can't stand it if it isn't. If anyone finds that fucking book.."
Maddie looked at me for a few seconds, then resumed looking.
I started going through everything again.
Eleventh time.
Not in the blue backpack. Not under these biology books. Not in any of the six lunch boxes. Not hiding in any of the gym uniforms.
Twelfth time.
Backpack. Biology books. Lunch boxes. Gym uniforms.
Thirteenth time.
Where was it?
"Maybe the lost and found in the cafeteria?" Maddie suggested, resting a hand on my shoulder. I rubbed my face with my hands. I knew it would probably be hopeless, but I had to tell myself we'd find it.
"Yeah. Yeah, maybe the cafeteria."
