Chapter 5

-2 weeks later-

"Spencer, I found an apartment!" Melissa exclaimed to her younger sister. The two sisters had temporarily shared a motel room.

"That's great, Melissa. Why are you telling me this?"

"I thought we could-"

"We?" Spencer asked in disbelief. This is the first time Melissa had described her and Spencer as "we."

Toby tried calling Spencer one more time. If she didn't pick up, he would visit her again.

"Hey, Toby." Spencer's sweet voice said on the phone. He was so relieved to hear her voice.

"Spencer," he said, more relieved than he's ever been in his life, "I'm so glad you're okay."

"Toby, can you meet me at the brew later? I really need to talk."

"Of course. If you need anything else, call me."

"Okay. Thanks."

Ten minutes after Toby arrived at the brew, he saw Spencer's beautiful face walk through the door. He greeted her with a long hug. They both loved every second of that hug. "What did you want to talk about?" Toby asked Spencer as they sat down on a nearby couch. He grabbed Spencer's hands to let her know that she was okay.

"My parents... They left."

"What do you mean?"

"They were hurting my sister... and the neighbors called the cops because they heard screaming... They're gone."

"Oh my god, Spence."

Toby pulled Spencer in for another hug. This one was more meaningful. She knew that she was going to be okay. She was safe now.

"What happened to your sister? Is she okay?"

"She's fine... She's still a bit... Shaken." Spencer took a lot of pauses while talking. She was still in shock. "She's taking care of me now. We're moving to a tiny apartment. It only has one bedroom, but it'll work. I'm letting her sleep in there. I'm sleeping on the couch."

Toby couldn't let this happen. Spencer needed him the most now. "If you need a place to stay, you're always welcome at my place. I'm sure my dad won't mind."

"I can't, Toby. That's asking way too much. I'm fine, I promise."

Although Spencer insisted that she was fine, Toby could tell that deep down, she wasn't.
