"You want to give up the baby?" Spencer asked in disbelief. Melissa nodded. "It makes sense, Spencer. This wasn't an easy decision for me to make." She explained. Spencer could feel the tears running down her face.
"Spencer, please don't be upset. This baby is going to be living with a family who can actually take care of it. We're giving it a better life."
"But doesn't it bother you knowing that you'll have a child out there that you'll never get to raise?"
"Not really. Besides, the baby will know who I am. It just won't get to meet me until it turns 18."
"Are you sure about that? Some parents like to change their minds."
"Why are you being so uptight? God, you sound just like mom!"
"Don't say that! Don't ever say that! I will never be as terrible as her."
"Then why are you being such a bitch?"
Spencer couldn't believe what she just heard. She left the apartment, stopping herself before she said anything stupid.
----
Spencer didn't know where she was going, but she knew that she needed some space. She thought things over.
She didn't even care that Melissa had called her a bitch. Melissa wanted to give up her baby.
It dawned on Spencer: Melissa is old enough to make her own decisions. If she wants to give up the baby, then she will. She didn't have to listen to Spencer. Melissa knew what she was doing. She's smart, and not just book-smart.
Spencer, unable to see the road due to the darkness, quickly made a U-turn. The road seemed oddly empty. She just assumed it was because it was late, and everyone was most likely asleep. She looked down to see her phone, noticing somebody had texted her.
It was Toby.
She knew texting while driving was dangerous, so she decided to wait to respond. She put her phone back in the cup holder and looked up.
She hadn't noticed that she was going in a one-way lane.
When she looked up, she crashed head-on into a car coming her way.
