A few months passed, and days stayed the same. Daniel didn't get better, but he didn't get worse. Claire grew up a little, and turned two. Valerie turned three. I was glad that through all this drama, I still had my girls. They remained smiling and joyful, even in the worst of days.
Toby and I talked about adopting- or possibly conceiving, if it's still possible- another baby. We love our kids so much, and we want to have as many as possible. The only thing holding us back was the money. If we wanted another kid- regardless of how it comes into this world- we would be in a huge amount of debt. I'm only a teacher. I don't make that much money. Sure, Toby helps design buildings, but most of that money goes to his company. Hanna constantly offers me a writing position for Vogue, but that would mean even more work hours, meaning I won't get to spend as much time with my family.
"You know, Vogue is always looking for a new writer," Hanna sing-songed.
"Hanna, no offense, but writing about fashion and models and glamour isn't really my thing."
"Is that what it's really about?"
"Kind of. You're always so busy. You barely spend enough time with your husband. What if I start spending less time with my family?"
"But all your bills will be paid for. You and the girls get to live in New York!"
"I don't want my kids growing up in a big city, Hanna. It's way too dangerous."
"Can you at least consider it? It would be so great working with you!"
"I don't know, Han."
Hanna was never really a huge help in the job department, but it was great to know that she cared. I'll try not to focus on our financial struggles for now. Until then, I'm staying a creative writing teacher with two beautiful baby girls and a architect for a husband.
I kept in touch with Jason, which was easy, since we live practically down the street from each other. We eat lunch together every day, and talk about our childhoods. Well, mostly his childhood. His was far more interesting than mine. He spent his summer vacations in Atlanta, and his Christmas vacations in ski resorts and fancy hotels. He had the childhood I always wanted.
"Maybe this Christmas we could take a family vacation," Jason offered. I couldn't imagine all of us going on vacation together. I just met Jason this year- I still haven't introduced him to my kids. He's met Toby, but we've never gotten around to him meeting the girls.
One Saturday morning, as I was reading a novel in the living room with Claire at my side, there was a knock at the door. I opened it, only to find Hanna, once again.
"Hey! What are you doing here?" I said, greeting her with a hug.
"Auntie Hanna!" Claire said, running up to Hanna and hugging her legs.
"Hey, Claire! Wow, you're getting so big!" She said, hugging my daughter back, "I decided to visit my best friend and say that the writing position is still up for grabs." Hanna sing-songed.
"Hanna, I'll have to talk to Toby about it."
"Are you considering?" Hanna's eyes widened at the possibility of me considering her offer. She seemed so excited.
"I guess so."
