She tried to not tell her parents that she wanted to end her life. She made up an excuse that she confused it with something else. Of course, they didn't believe her. "Spencer, if there's something you need to tell us, now is the time. We're this close to calling the police." Principal Hackett had told her. Out of nowhere, Spencer started crying. Not because she was suicidal, not because she was being bullied, but because she was so disappointed in herself.
All was forgiven, and she promised not to do anything like that again. Her parents begged the principal not to tell anyone anything.
"What the hell were you thinking? Spencer, you could've gotten arrested!"
The halls were empty.
"If you think you're getting away with this, you're wrong. You're lucky we're not punishing you more."
More tears streamed down Spencer's face. She hated her life. She hated her family. She just wanted to die.
A locker closed. They weren't alone. A mysterious boy appeared around the corner. He had heard everything.
"Shouldn't you be on your way to class?" Spencer's mother asked him.
"I was just on my way." The boy said, taking a look at Spencer. That was her. The girl who was getting teased in the halls. For a second, he looked into her eyes. They were hard to see, due to her glasses, but they were beautiful and brown. He wanted to talk to her, but not like this.
----
"Hi." He said to Spencer the next day at school. She remained silent, worried that he would begin to make fun of her. "Look, I'm not going to make fun of you or anything," he said, knowing what she was thinking, "I saw you yesterday with your family and you seemed upset. I'm Toby." He said. She noticed his beautiful blue eyes. She could stare into them all day. "I'm... Spencer." She said, slowly warming up to him.
---
They got to talking, and they loved being in each other's presence. He made her smile, which was something she rarely did. She went to his house often to do homework, but she used that as an excuse to be with him instead of her screwed up family.
"You know, you make me really happy." Spencer told him as she finished up her geometry homework.
"You make me happy, too." Toby said, coming closer to see her better. She wasn't wearing her glasses. She ditched them for contacts. He thought she looked beautiful, but a part of him missed her in glasses. He pushed some of her hair back behind her ear. He leaned in to kiss her, and she didn't stop him. They were about an inch away from their lips touching, until Toby's father opened the door, interrupting them from their first kiss.
He had sensed that they were about to do something other than study, so instead of inviting her for dinner like he had planned, Toby's father lied and told Spencer that her mother was expecting her at home. Spencer and Toby said their goodbyes, and Spencer left, deep in thought.
A boy almost kissed her. For the first time. She had never been kissed before. Did he do that because he wanted to? Or because he felt like he had to? Does he really like her? Spencer couldn't bear to think about it right now. She decided to talk to him tomorrow.
When Spencer arrived home, the first thing she noticed were two open bottles. One of scotch, and the other of wine. Great. Now she had to come home and deal with the drunk messes that were her parents. She heard yelling coming from upstairs, and a scream. She ran upstairs to investigate. Spencer gasped at the horrible sight.
Because tonight, it wasn't her who would get hurt. For the first time ever, it was her older sister, Melissa.
