"Thanks for driving me here. I really don't want to be with my parents right now." Spencer told Toby as they arrived to a motel right outside of Rosewood. Toby held Spencer's hand. She felt so comfortable in his presence. "Won't your parents be worried?" Spencer asked. Toby shook his head. "My dad doesn't really care where I am anymore." He explained.
"And your mom?" Spencer asked, curious. Toby looked down at his feet. "My mom... passed away a few years ago." He said. Spencer regretted what she said almost immediately. "Oh my god... I had no idea. I'm sorry." She apologized. Toby held her hands. "You don't need to be sorry."
----
Spencer and Toby got ready to go to bed. They both pretended like they didn't secretly watch each other undress. Toby let Spencer sleep in his shirt, and Spencer slipped out of her uncomfortable jeans. Toby removed his shirt, and Spencer tried not to stare. He was surprisingly muscular. To distract herself, Spencer mentally arranged where and how she was going to sleep. They both thought that the room had two beds, but there was only one. It had been nearly three months since Spencer actually slept on a bed. She longed for the feeling of a real good night's sleep.
Spencer laid down on the bed, and was overcome with the feeling of relaxation. Within ten minutes, Spencer fell into a deep sleep. Toby noticed, and covered Spencer's semi-exposed body with a blanket. He kissed her head, and crawled into bed next to her.
----
Spencer woke up the next morning to find that her arms had been wrapped around Toby Cavanaugh's body. Part of her told her to get up and try to forget that happened. However, an even bigger part told her to stay put. After all, she was so comfortable. She smiled to herself and tried to fall back asleep.
----
"If things get too uncomfortable at home, I'm here for one more night. You can always come back." Toby mentioned.
"I might actually take you up on that." Spencer said. She then realized that the night before had been extremely boring. They did nothing except sleep. Both of them wanted something more, but they never got it. "I'm sorry... This was a bust." She apologized.
"It wasn't so bad... And remember what I told you. You don't have to apologize." Toby said and smiled. His smile brought her to a safe place. It gave her a warm, calming feeling.
Suddenly, Toby took a few steps closer to her. Spencer was a little surprised, but she didn't stop him.
Their lips met. Toby gently placed his hand on Spencer's hip. Spencer wrapped her arms around him. They both took in everything. Their scents, the feeling of each other's skin, how their lips tasted. Spencer felt as if she could stay in Toby's arms forever. She never wanted to let go. Neither did he. He pulled her petite figure closer to him. He made sure he wasn't being too rough with her, especially around her hips. He remembered a story Spencer had told him, explaining why her hips were so fragile.
When she was thirteen, Spencer had come home from school, only to find out her parents had been drinking. She was minding her own business, doing her homework, when suddenly, her parents walked in and started beating her. Their words still echoed in her head.
Why can't you be more like Melissa?
What's wrong, is the baby going to cry now?
We should've gotten an abortion when we had the chance!
They pushed her against a wall and her hips nearly broke when she hit the wall. Later that night, she tried running away, but they caught her and beat her again.
Four years later, and she was still in pain.
Spencer and Toby's lips finally parted. "I was not expecting that." Spencer said. Toby's hands were still wrapped around her waist. He pushed a few locks of her hair behind her ear. "Me neither." He said, slowly letting go of her.
Spencer looked into Toby's crystal blue eyes. She felt safe. She felt like she actually mattered.
For the first time ever, Spencer Hastings finally felt like her life meant something.
