A/N: this chapter is pretty short, but only because I want to build suspense. Enjoy!

The rehearsal dinner was perfect. Everything was perfect. I was slightly nervous that something horrible would happen, like they played the wrong song, or Melissa would get too drunk or something. But nothing went wrong, and when I got nervous, Toby would hold my hand and tell me that I was going to be alright. His hand felt perfect in mine. His thumb gently caressed one of the many physical scars my parents left. I knew I was safe with him.

It wasn't until halfway through that I noticed that something was off. Something wasn't right, and it gave me a terrible, uneasy feeling.

Toby's father wasn't here. His stepmother was, but Daniel Cavanaugh was nowhere to be found. He didn't even leave his name in the guestbook. Or called to confirm that he'll come to the rehearsal dinner.

I knew something was wrong. I mean, sure, Toby's father may not like me that much, but he wouldn't miss his own son's rehearsal dinner, right? Toby was counting on him to be there. He was so hopeful his father would be there.

I looked over, and saw Toby's stepmother pull him out into the hallway. When no one was looking, I followed them. Just to make sure that they would be okay.

I couldn't make out much of what they were saying. But I knew it was about Daniel.

When I knew they were done, I went back to the tables, and pretended like I wasn't listening to them. When I passed people, they congratulated me on our engagement. I thanked them, but I still had my mind on Toby. What happened?

Toby finds me, and he looks like he had seen a ghost. His face was pale, and he looked like he was trying to say something, but he couldn't.

"Babe, what's wrong?" I ask him, worried for him. I grab his hands and look him in the eyes. He looked like he was holding back tears.

"My dad died this morning."
