"Wait, you have other kids?" I ask, in disbelief. I really believed that Henry was their first, and only, child.
"That's right," Tom said, "Nathan is six and Joshua is five."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"How come I've never seen them?" I ask, wanting proof that they were trying to trick me.
"They were at this thing called school," Jannette said sarcastically, "which was something you should've been at, instead of visiting us."
Tom and Jannette filled us in on what we needed to know about the boys. They were biological brothers, but Jannette and Tom adopted them when they were just babies.
We finally met them a few minutes before Tom and Jannette were about to leave. Both of them were brown- haired, and they both had bright blue eyes. I couldn't tell them apart.
Their parents said goodbye, thankfully there were no tears, and I immediately came up with a plan.
"Toby, I'll take Henry, and you try and keep the boys occupied."
Henry began to scream and cry in my arms. I tried all my normal tricks, but they didn't work. I immediately started to panic.
This hasn't happened before. Why is this happening now?
I try feeding him, changing his diaper, even bathing him. Nothing worked.
I was worried that Toby was struggling with the other two, so I went downstairs to check on them.
I was shocked to find both the boys fast asleep on the couch, and Toby was on one of the other couches, slowly falling asleep as well, as if it was nothing.
How? How in the world did he get those boys asleep so quickly? It was like he had superpowers or something.
Toby notices me struggling and fully wakes up. Henry was still wailing, but that didn't bother Joshua or Nathan.
"Let me hold him."
"Toby, I can handle this."
"You need help."
His voice was calm. I handed Henry over to him, and within minutes, Henry stopped crying.
"How do you do that?" I ask him, frustrated.
"My mom was a preschool teacher. I would help her all the time... Before she got sick."
"You never talk much about your mom."
"We'll talk about her later. Right now we need to make sure Henry falls asleep."
Henry starts flailing his arms around and he begins to cry again. I have an idea, and I run to the car. I grab a stuffed duck that I bought for Henry the day after he was born.
I give it to him, and he stops crying.
It wasn't long before Henry fell asleep in Toby's arms.
----
"We can't do this, can we?" I say, my head lying on his shoulder. Toby put the boys in their rooms. It was past midnight, and Tom and Jannette still weren't home.
"What do you mean?" Toby asks me, petting my hair and kissing the top of my head.
"We can't be parents any time soon. You're amazing with kids. I would be the worst parent in the world."
"Don't say that. You'd be the best mother ever." He reassured me, kissing the top of my head again.
"You're right. I'm not ready to have kids yet." I admit.
Toby wraps his arm around me, and kisses my cheek. "One day, the time will come. Until then, we'll just have to wait."
