Toby and his father spent most of the day arguing. I was a bit concerned when he didn't celebrate and rejoice like I thought he would.

After I put the girls to sleep, Toby entered our room, an angry look on his face. "I can't believe him. He spent the last three years lying to us. He missed so much. I can't forgive him for this." He said, crawling into bed.

"Toby, I'm going to be honest with you. I get that you're angry, and you can't forgive him for this. But he's here. You spent the last three years thinking that he was gone forever. This is your second chance. I know if the tables were turned, and my dad came back-"

"Spencer, are you serious? Your father hurt you."

"That doesn't mean I don't miss him every day. Toby, you need to make things right with your dad, before he really is gone forever." That was huge for me to admit. I never actually said it out loud, but I really do miss my father. My good memories of him were extremely limited, but I never got a chance to say goodbye. I never got a chance to make things right between us. And for that, I have so many regrets.

I know my feelings for Daniel weren't the best, and Daniel and I have a mutual hate for each other, but he's still my father-in-law. God forbid Daniel really dies, Toby would feel the exact same way I do. Keeping this huge secret about your regrets, and wishing you could start over.

When I admitted all of that to him, he spoke again. "I'll talk to him tomorrow."

The next morning, as I was making breakfast for the girls, Toby came from behind me and wrapped his arms around my torso. "Good morning." He said, kissing my cheek.

"Hey, did you talk to your dad?" I asked.

"Yeah, I did." He said. There was something different about his voice. It was almost like he was relieved. He put his hands on my waist. "Thank you." He said, kissing my cheek again.

"Good morning!" Valerie said, running down the stairs. Toby scooped her up in his arms and kissed her cheek.

"Toby, can you finish making breakfast? I'm going to get Claire." I said and made my way upstairs.

When I got to Claire's room, I was shocked to find her, huddled in her grandpa's arms. "She was awake, and she was crying. I thought I'd try to calm her down."

"Are you sure she wasn't too much trouble?"

"Look, Spencer, I'm really sorry about the things I said yesterday. It got out of hand." He apologized. "Toby told me what you said, and I didn't realize that both your parents passed away."

I looked at him for a while. He doesn't realize that an apology can't take back what he said. I take a deep breath, and respond. "I accept your apology. I'm sorry I snapped at you."

"No, you had every reason to." He said. "I'm sorry. I was wrong about you. Honestly, I thought you were just some girl who wanted nothing but meaningless sex. Toby already went through that, I didn't want him to get hurt again." I'm reminded of when Toby first told me that he had sex with a girl before me. Some tipsy girl at a party wanted to hook up with him, and he was too shy to say no. She never bothered called him afterwards, and he had major trust issues because of that.

I grabbed Claire. "I love Toby. I wouldn't hurt him."

"I know that now."

I made my way downstairs, and Toby and Valerie were eating breakfast at the table. "There's my other beautiful girl." Toby said, getting up and taking Claire from me, kissing her forehead multiple times. Claire laughed, and it was one of the best sounds in the world.

"Mommy, can you read me a story?" Valerie asked after taking a bite of her food.

"Maybe tonight, sweetie. Mommy has a lot of work to do today." I said. I felt bad not spending the well-needed time with my daughter, but I had over forty portfolios and probably thirty essays to grade. It was a pain in the ass, but at the same time, it was a blessing. It was my time away from the family, as selfish as that sounds. I can breathe. I can have time to myself. I love being a mom, and I love my kids more than anything in the world, but I also love my alone time.

"I can do it." Daniel offered.

"Yay!" Valerie exclaimed, "And I like it when mommy does funny voices." she added.

"I can definitely do that." Daniel said to her.

Valerie raced upstairs, and Daniel tried to follow, only to stop at the end of the stairs, panting.

"Come on, grandpa!" Valerie exclaimed from the top of the stairs.

Daniel waved his arm to let Valerie know that he was on his way. Suddenly, Daniel threw up. I gasped, completely shocked by this sudden action.

"Dad! Oh my god, are you alright?" Toby asked, running towards his father, who was now crouched down by the floor.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just getting old." Daniel insisted. Toby helped him up. Within ten seconds after getting up, Daniel began to stumble, as if he were nauseous of dizzy. I began to worry more, and then he fainted.
