Everyone was in a state of shock. Nobody was terribly upset, since Kira didn't really have any friends. We didn't know what to do. Do we continue on with the day? Let kids go home and grieve? It was times like this where I don't know why I became a teacher in the first place. For some students, this is their first real-life experience with death.

Was this my fault?

I was the one who told her to talk to her mother. What happened to her? How was she "attacked"?

I continued to teach the rest of my classes, as if I wasn't bothered by it. But deep down, it was all I could think about.

"Hey, how are you feeling? I know that Kira girl was in one of your classes," Toby said at dinner. The cops were investigating her death. There was a possibility she was murdered.

"I'm alright. It was just so sudden. Do you know exactly what happened?" I ask.

"I don't know if you'll want to hear all the gory details..." said Toby. I sighed. It's such a terrible thing to hear. I talked to her just yesterday.

To distract myself, I fed Valerie and tried to get her to talk.

"She's not going to say anything any time soon," Toby mentioned, "it's way too early."

"Well, one can only hope." I say, followed by me trying to get Valerie to say "mama" for probably the hundredth time that day.

When I knew Toby was asleep, I crawled out of bed and tried to find something- anything- that had to do with Kira. Call me obsessed, but I needed to know what happened to her.

I searched the drawers, Toby's desk, and I found nothing. It wasn't until I searched his car that I found her file.

"MATTHEWS, KIRA C" it read. Jackpot. I took it to the living room and read it on the couch. I was being careful not to make any noise. I didn't want Toby to wake up.

So it wasn't her mother.
