"What the hell?" I asked, hearing the screams and footsteps of at least a hundred students. Twelve of them ran into our classroom.

"What's going on?" Brittany asked the kids.

"He has a gun," one boy said, shaken with fear.

Instead of asking who, Brittany took the students and I to the farthest corner in the room, away from the door. She turned the lights off, locked the door, and told everyone to be quiet.

It all seemed so surreal. Is this actually happening?

"Please, don't say a word. We don't want him to know we're in here." Brittany whispered.

"Do the police know we're here?" I ask. The first person I thought about was Toby. What will he think, knowing that I'm in here?

"I hope so. I called them a few minutes ago," one blonde girl said.

Have you ever had a moment in your life where you were too scared to even breathe? That's how I felt. I held my breath, praying to every God in every religion to keep us all safe. These kids had families. These were daughters, sons, sisters, and brothers. All of us were crying silent tears, praying that we would be okay. It was the longest twenty minutes of our entire lives.

All of a sudden, we heard someone try to open the door.

I hadn't even realized that Brittany was holding my hand until she squeezed it.

The person on the other side tried to open their door like their life depended on it. We all knew the door was locked, but we kept in mind that this person had a gun.

To our surprise, the door opened, causing all of us to gasp and shriek in fear.

But it wasn't the bad guy. It was Toby.

Without thinking, I ran up to him and held him close to me. I didn't want to let go. He was my escape from this terrible reality. "You're okay," he said, kissing the top of my head. "Yeah, I'm okay," I whispered. I didn't even notice that the door was wide open.

"Is everyone else okay?" Toby asked, still holding on to me.

Everyone nodded. They all assumed Toby was asking if they were okay physically. It was true, we were all okay. But this was a memory that would permanently scar all of us. This was something we would never be able to forget. Something that would give us endless nightmares. Something that would make us too scared to leave the safety of our homes. Mentally, we were all damaged. And not just the fifteen of us in the room, but for all the students and staff in this school. Hell, even all the people in this town.

We heard another bang. Everyone, including myself, screamed. Well, everyone except for Toby.

He fell to the ground.
