Toby took his father to the hospital later that day. I offered to go with him, but he begged me to stay at home with the girls. I obeyed, but still continued to worry.
"Why did grandpa fall, mommy?" Valerie asked. I didn't know how to answer. She witnessed everything, and I know it's going to be difficult for her to forget what happened.
"Mommy!" Claire exclaimed, causing my heart to stop. She finally said it. "Mommy!" She yelled again. I picked her up, the happiest I've been all day. I wanted to call Toby, but I figured he would want to be with his dad right now. As if he could read my mind all the way from the hospital, he called me.
"Hey," I said, wanting to hear his soothing voice.
"Hey. He's getting a CT scan done right now, so we may take a little longer than expected."
"That's alright. Do you need me at all?" I offered.
"I think it needs to be just me right now."
"Okay. I love you."
"I love you too."
And with that, the conversation ended, and we both hung up.

I was fast asleep on our bed, alone, when I heard the door open. I woke up, hoping it was Toby. But it was Valerie.
"Hey, sweetie. What's wrong?" I asked, noticing her tear-stained face.
"I had a bad dream." She said, "I want daddy." She began to cry again, and I felt completely hopeless. What can I do now? She doesn't want me, and Toby's not available right now. He's probably still at the hospital.
"Come here, honey." I said, bringing her onto the bed, and wiping a few of her tears away. "Daddy isn't here right now. How about you sleep on our bed until he comes home?"
"Okay." Valerie said, a sad look on her face. She fell asleep quickly, but I knew she wasn't happy. She wanted her dad.
Right as I was about to fall asleep, the door opened again. "Spencer?" I heard his voice. I sat up, and saw him. "How is he? Is he okay?" I asked. Without answering, Toby crawled into bed with me, relying on me to make whatever pain there was go away.
"He's got cancer," he said, his voice muffled by my shirt. I was glad Valerie was asleep, because she'd be asking too many questions.
"What kind?"
"It's in his lungs. They found it early, so he could get treatment now for a better chance of recovery, but he doesn't want it."
"Why not?"
"Because of my mom. She didn't want treatment, either."
"He wants to be with her." I said, finally coming to a conclusion.
"I'm trying to talk him into getting treatment, just so he can be around longer. He just came back." Toby said, tears brimming his eyes. He was so hurt. He couldn't lose him. Not again.
"I'll try talking to him, too." I offer. Valerie woke up from the sound of our voices, and smiled upon seeing her father.
"You're back!" She said, jumping into his arms. Even though he was hurting, Toby still pulled it together for Valerie. He smiled upon seeing her awake, and brought her in for a hug. "I missed you." He said to her, then kissing her forehead, "let's get you back into your bed." He said, carrying her out the door.
As I laid in bed, I began to wonder why we kept losing so many people. I lost my parents. Toby lost his mother, and he's about to lose his father again. We're not seeing Henry again for another ten years. I'll never get to see Kira's bright smile again. Melissa might be living on the streets right now. Aria and Ezra live three thousand miles away.
Maybe the reason why we keep losing so many people is because we're better off alone.
