He was waiting by the phone when it started ringing. He hoped it was Spencer, answering his text, but it was Melissa.
"Hey, is everything alright?"
All he heard on the other end were muffled sobs.
"Melissa? Is everything alright?"
"No."
"What's wrong?"
"Spencer was in a car accident."
Before she even got to finish her sentence, he raced to his car, putting on his clothes on the way.
His mind went to the worst possible scenario.
What if Spencer had died in that crash? What we he do? How would he live without her?
He tried to distract himself from those thoughts. "Don't think like that. She'll be fine. She's going to be alright." He told himself on the way to the hospital.
----
When Toby arrived to the hospital, he immediately found Melissa. She had been crying since she heard the news. She felt like this was all her fault. Spencer wouldn't have stormed off like that if Melissa hadn't called her a bitch.
"Melissa! Is she okay? Is Spencer okay?" Toby panicked.
"She's still in surgery. God, this is all my fault!" She cried, burying her face in her hands.
"This isn't your fault. How long has she been in surgery?"
"About two hours."
"Have they told you anything?"
"Not yet."
"Alright. I'm waiting here until she's done."
"Toby, you don't have to-"
"I know. I want to."
----
Three more hours had passed. It was now almost midnight. Toby's father had called him, wondering where he had run off to. For the first time since he met Spencer, Toby was honest with his father. He knew about his father's negative feelings towards Spencer, but he needed to know that his son was hurting. Toby was convinced that Spencer was perfect, and he couldn't imagine what he would do if that perfection had disappeared, and was nothing but a name on a gravestone.
The doctor finally arrived with news. Spencer was alright. She had a lot of internal bleeding, and she had broken her right leg and sprained her other one, but other than that, she was alright.
Toby let out a huge sigh of relief. "Can we see her?" Melissa asked. The doctor said only immediate family could see her, meaning that Toby had to go home. "I'll call you when you're able to see her." Melissa promised. Toby, broken-hearted, left the hospital and made his way home.
----
"I'm so sorry."
"Melissa, there's nothing you need to be sorry for. This was my fault."
"You wouldn't have left if I hadn't called you a bitch!"
"I don't care about that anymore."
Spencer was too tired to think about all the drama that had happened before the accident. She had a huge headache, and the medication wasn't doing anything to stop it.
"I kept thinking while I was in there. What if that was the last thing I ever said to you? I wouldn't be able to like with myself if the last thing you heard from me was 'why are you being such a bitch?' I would've hated myself."
Spencer brought her sister in for a hug.
Melissa needed it more than she did.
