"Spencer, on behalf of The New York Times, we would like to offer you a job as head writer," Ezra said during dinner, "we would love nothing more than to have an award-winning writer on our team."
"I would love to," I said. Valerie climbed onto my lap and hugged me. This was exactly what I wanted. My life was absolutely perfect. Sure, my parents are long gone and my sister practically disappeared without a trace, but other than that, I'm happy. My life was finally perfect. I'm married to the love of my life, I have two beautiful girls. Who could ask for more?
Toby's phone started to ring, so he got up from the table to answer. "Sorry, it might be about my dad." He explained, going into the hallway to answer the phone. Daniel's health hasn't been the best lately. He's still being treated for his cancer, and so far, nothing has been working. He went into a coma a few weeks ago, and he is currently on life support. Since then, nothing.
"Aria, thank you again for arranging this amazing dinner." I said, trying to get my mind off the worrisome things.
"Anything for my best friend!" Aria exclaimed. Valerie gave her a smile, and Aria effortlessly smiled back. Aria has become more and more comfortable around Valerie. I don't think of Valerie as her daughter anymore, and neither does she. We both are comfortable saying out loud that Valerie is my daughter.
"Mommy, can Andrea and Lia please spend the night?" Claire asked. She's become close with Andrea and Lia, Aria's other two daughters.
"You'll have to ask Aria," I said. As I spoke to Claire, I noticed a bruise on her forearm. "What's that?" I asked, examining the mark.
"Oh, I fell." Claire stated blankly. I sighed a little, out of relief. The last thing I want is for my kids to be in the exact same situation as I was in school. Bullied. Tormented. Hated.
"Spencer, can I see you in the hallway for a second?" Toby called for me. I made my way to him. When we met, I noticed he was fighting back tears.
"They're pulling the plug." He said. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Without saying anything, I hugged him and didn't let go.
"We get to see him for the last time tomorrow. I think we should all go." He said.
"Of course. If you need anything, just let me know. I love you."
"I love you more." He said, bringing me in for another hug. Toby kissed the top of my head, and I could feel my heart break for him.
