The following days were simple. Considering our circumstances, simple was good. I longed for simple days. I wanted to wake up, go to work, come home, and be with my family. You know, like a normal person.

On a Monday morning, I got a letter from my sister, followed by something in a envelope, also from her. I haven't heard from my sister in a really long time. What could she want? I've wanted to hear from her. She hasn't even met Valerie yet.

I opened the letter.

Spencer,

It's been so long! I've been wanting to see you again, especially since mom told me you had a baby! She tells me that her name is Valerie. That's such a beautiful name. Maybe you could bring her next time I see you.

I'm so lucky to have found a love like you and Toby's, and I really hope you all can make the wedding.

Love,
Melissa

Wedding?

I opened the envelope, and like I suspected, a wedding invitation was inside.

You are cordially invited to the wedding of
Melissa Kristen Hastings
and
Derek Alexander Geist
June 18, 2016

Derek? They were dating!

At least Melissa was with a nice guy. If she was marrying some asshole, like the guy who got her pregnant, I wouldn't go to the wedding.

Of course, I accepted the invitation. She's my sister, and I know she did the same thing for me.

But why wouldn't she tell me that her and Derek were going out? I thought that they were just friends.

At dinner, Valerie uttered something. It was something I could barely hear, but I heard it. And so did Toby.

"Mommy," Valerie said. I nearly dropped everything.

"Did you hear that?" Toby asked, just as shocked as I was.

"Yeah." I said.

"Mommy," Valerie repeated. I gasped, and Toby picked her up.

"Say it again!" Toby said, happier than ever.

"She's eight months old, Toby. She can't understand you." I said.

"Mommy!" Valerie exclaimed.

Toby and I laughed, and we spend the next few hours listening to Valerie talk, and trying to get her to say more things.

The next day, as I was teaching, I suddenly felt light-headed. I was dizzy, and for a few seconds, my mind went blank. I assumed it was a fever, or just a simple headache, so I did nothing. I continued to teach, as if nothing in the world bothered me.

However, as the days passed, I got more and more sick. It was to the point where I had a migraine so bad that I couldn't move. I was in so much pain, and Toby had to take a couple days off from work to take care of me.

"Do you want me to call Melissa and tell her we can't make it? The wedding is in three days, and by the looks of it, you're not getting any better."

It took all my power and energy to talk. "No. I have to go. She needs me there."

Toby flashed a sad smile, and I blacked out.
