Chapter 115

I sat in the meeting room, anxiously waiting for it to be over. I felt terrible. Toby's probably been sitting with the adoption agency for an hour, waiting for me. But I was an idiot and chose this meeting over Toby.

I was just proving everything Toby had said right. I was being selfish.

I started to pack my things, then my boss noticed.

"Spencer, is everything alright?" She asked.

No. Nothing was alright. I gave up the chance to have another baby to be here. I never wanted this job in the first place. "I can't be here. I made a mistake." I said, getting up and making my way to the door.

"What do you mean?" Anna asked, looking scared and frustrated at the same time.

"I quit." I said, storming out of the room.

I tried running into the agency's building, hoping to at least make the second half of the meeting. But before I even got inside, I saw Toby coming out.

"Spencer? Where the hell were you?"

"I was at the meeting, but-"

"I needed you, Spencer. Now thanks to you, we can't adopt Dylan."

I felt my heart break into a trillion pieces.

"Toby, I-"

"Save it, Spencer. I'm going home."

I didn't tell him that I quit my job. He was too furious with me to listen. And I didn't blame him.

I followed him to his car. At this point, I didn't care about my car. I could leave it out in the parking lot to rust for all I care. I needed my husband.

"Toby, please just listen to me."

"What could you possibly say to make this better?!" He asked, raising his voice. I hate it when he's angry.

"I quit my job." I said, getting into his car.

Toby got in the car, but didn't start it.

"Great. Now you don't have a job. Another reason why they won't let us have another baby."

"Is that all you care about? You're completely forgetting that you already have two beautiful daughters!"

Toby went silent. He started the car, and drove, still not saying anything.

"There's something else." I said, "You can't be this upset over just this."

Toby was silent until we pulled into our driveway. Then, he buried his face in his hands.

"Everything is just going terribly. My dad isn't getting any better, I'm failing miserably at my job, and I just thought that this would make up for all that."

I took my seatbelt off, and took his hands in mine. "Hey, I know you're going through some hard times. But we're going to get through it together, okay? We always do." I said, staring into his eyes.

Toby nodded, then kissed me. When our lips connected, it was the best feeling in the entire world. Nothing felt more perfect. It was the longest kiss we've had in a long time. Toby began to kiss my neck, and I stopped him. "What about the girls?" I asked.

"Valerie is at school, and Claire is at daycare. We have the whole house to ourselves."

Our lips met one more time, and we made our way into the house, closing the door before we took advantage of the empty house.
