The DNA test came back positive. Jason DiLaurentis is my half-brother. But I kept that between us and my family. I didn't need the entire student body and faculty to know that I have the same father as the basketball coach. It was bad enough the students already assumed we were dating. Poor teenagers, willing to do anything to see a beautiful love story in real life, and not in some Nicholas Sparks movie.
I got back in touch with Aria, and she planned on visiting us within the next few weeks. She told me that she would bring Ezra, and their two twin girls, Andrea and Lia. I was excited to see them again, after almost two years.
When I hung up with Aria, Toby came home from work. "Hello, beautiful." He greeted me with a kiss. I had been holding Claire, and after Toby kissed me, he took our daughter in his arms, causing her to giggle. It made me more than happy seeing them so joyous.
"I have some news," Toby said, sitting next to me on the couch. Claire remained in Toby's arms.
"What is it?" I asked, petting Claire's hair.
"I got a job offer. It's pretty great, too. They want me to design the building for Lincoln International Bank." He said. I've never heard of Lincoln International Bank, but it must be a huge deal. I could see how happy it made Toby.
"That's awesome!" I exclaimed, leaning over to kiss him. "When do you start?"
"That's the thing," Toby said, his voice suddenly lowering. He sounded nervous, like he was hiding something. "the job is in Chicago."
I felt my heart drop to my stomach. Chicago? Thats hundreds of miles away. We can't just move, our life is here in New Hampshire. I love Toby, and I'd do anything to see him succeed, but Chicago is so far away. And everything, including my job, is here.
"Toby, we can't just leave New Hampshire. I have a job, too." I said. I suddenly realize that what I said came out the wrong way. Toby looked offended, and I tried to take it back.
"So I'm just supposed to give up on this amazing opportunity because of you?"
"I didn't mean it like that, Toby! I just mean that Chicago is very far away and it'll be hard to adjust."
Even though I tried to apologize, our conversation turned into a full-on argument. The only time we stopped fighting was when I left to go pick up Valerie from daycare.
When I returned home, Toby had made dinner, and he seemed less angry. We avoided talking to each other until the end of the night, when both the girls were asleep.
"I took the job." Toby said. In an instant, I felt my heart break. I was bothered by his sudden decision. At the same time, I was glad he took it. I want him to be happy, and if leaving makes him happy, so be it.
"Great." I said, too bothered to say anything else.
"I leave in the morning." He said. I crawled into the bed, and I expected Toby to wrap his arms around me and say goodnight like he usually does. But he didn't. In fact, he turned so his back was facing me.
And for the first time in the eight years that Toby and I have been together, I doubted our love.
