I tried calling Toby, but he left his phone in the room. I was terrified. What is he doing? Is he with Yvonne? Is he already regretting our marriage?
I waited in the hotel, long after we were supposed to check out. I looked like an idiot. He may never come back. I'm just stuck, waiting for him.
I used my phone to call Emily, his stepmother, or anybody that knows where he could be. Nobody had a single clue where he was.
I felt like I was in a movie. The helpless girl waits for a person who won't show up again. Like Natalie Portman in Where The Heart Is. The part where she was waiting for her mom to come back, and she never did. But this is different.
The day after our wedding. He just bails.
-:-
I had waited in the lobby of the hotel for two whole hours. I watched people come in and out, retrieving their bags, all while I was snacking on food I had gotten from a vending machine.
"Spence?" I heard a familiar voice say. I looked up, and there he was. He had worry in his eyes, acting like he had just seen me crying.
But I wasn't sad. I was angry.
Trying not to make a scene in the middle of the lobby, I grab him and take him to a deserted hallway.
"What the hell were you doing?" I ask.
"Spence, just hear me out," Toby said. I was not having it.
"No, you hear me out. I was worried sick! Do you have any idea how horrified I was when I saw that you were gone?! I thought you bailed! I thought you left me to be with-" My scolding was cut short when I stopped "to be with Yvonne," I wanted to say, but he doesn't know that I know.
Well, now he knows.
"Yvonne? You know about that?" Toby asked, looking horrified.
I nodded my head. "Yeah. I know." I said, my voice so low he could barely hear.
"Spence, I swear, it meant nothing. She made the moves on me." He said. I believed him. I mean, I saw it happen, after all. But even though I knew it wasn't his fault, and that he was clearly the victim in this situation, there was something that was keeping me from making up with him.
I told him that I was ready to go to the car. Knowing how I truly felt, he took me with him to the car, not saying a word.
-:-
I didn't start the engine. I just sat in the car, with him right next to me, completely silent.
"Were you with her?" I finally ask, the curiosity slowly eating me alive.
