Spencer opened the door to the apartment. There, standing in the living room, were her parents. It had been two months since they left, but it seemed like just yesterday. She tightly held onto Toby's hand. She needed him to be there. Spencer had no idea what to say. She wasn't upset, but she wasn't happy. "Mom. Dad." She said, realizing nobody had said anything in over two minutes. "Hello, Spencer." Her mother said. There was an elephant in the room. They all wanted to talk about what happened, but something wasn't letting them. "Do you need me?" Toby whispered to Spencer as they sat on the couch. "You don't have to be here if you don't want to." Spencer whispered back. "I'm staying. I'm not letting you do this alone." Toby said and kissed the top of her head. He thought that maybe that was a bit forward, but he didn't care. She needed him.
"We missed you." Spencer's mom said, breaking the silence.
"Oh, cut the crap, mom!" Melissa said, exiting the kitchen.
"Melissa, that is no way to speak to your mother." Spencer's dad interrupted.
"Maybe I should go." Toby said.
"No! Stay. Please." Spencer said to him.
"I think your friend should go, Spencer." Spencer's father said.
"No! Toby isn't leaving." Spencer insisted.
Toby didn't want to be in the middle of a conflict. "Spencer.. Your dad is right. I need to go." He said. Spencer grabbed Toby's hand and gave him her signature puppy-dog eyes. Toby couldn't resist. "Alright. I'll stay." He said to her. Spencer smiled.

The evening continued on with an awkwardly silent dinner. It wasn't until Spencer was putting away her dishes when someone finally spoke.
"Look. We all want to talk about what happened, so let's just talk, alright? I can't deal with all this silence." Melissa stated, obviously irritated. Her parents shifted uncomfortably in their chairs. "Okay, then. Let's talk." Spencer said. Toby was very uncomfortable, but that all changed when Spencer sat next to him. He placed his hand on Spencer's leg. Spencer put her hand on his. She loved that he was there, helping her through everything. "We both had a bad day. We thought some drinks would help us... Loosen up." Her mother explained. Melissa rolled her eyes. "And Melissa came over to get a few clothes she left behind. I don't remember what happened after that." Spencer's father confessed. A single tear rolled down Melissa's face. Her parents didn't even remember what they did to her. They don't remember the pain they made her feel, or how badly they hurt her. "We are so incredibly sorry, Melissa. We never meant to hurt you like that." Her mother said. Spencer started tearing up.
They were apologizing to Melissa. They only hurt her once. Spencer had been hurt more times than she could remember. They didn't even acknowledge Spencer. They made her feel ten times worse than they made Melissa feel. She felt unwanted. Stupid. Forgotten. They made her feel like a burden. A failure. She was always being compared to Melissa. She was never good enough.

Toby kissed Spencer's cheek when he said goodbye. If her parents weren't there, he would've kissed her lips. Spencer's father noticed, but said nothing until he left. "Who the hell was that?" He asked as soon as Spencer closed the door. Spencer's bright smile turned into a frown. "That's just my friend, Toby." She said, although she wanted him to be more than a friend. "He's sweet." Spencer's mom stated. My dad looks disappointed. "I wish I would've known that you had a boyfriend... Then we would've been able to talk. He was very quiet." Spencer's dad says. "He's not my boyfriend, dad. He's just a friend." Spencer explained. Before she got a chance to continue, her father interrupted her. "I do not want you hanging out with any boys. You need to be focusing on more important things."
"Like what?" Spencer retaliated, "Since when have you ever cared about me?!"Her father looked shocked. Her mother's face was pale, and she was at a loss for words. Spencer couldn't believe that she snapped like that. She grabbed her coat, mumbled a few things, and left the apartment, hoping to catch Toby before he left. To Spencer's relief, he was. She got into the car with him. "What are you doing? Is everything okay?" Toby asked, seeing the fear in Spencer's big, gorgeous brown eyes. "Please, just drive." Spencer asked quietly, putting her seatbelt on. Toby turned on the engine and drove away, leaving the apartment complex.
