While Toby was at physical therapy, I went with Aria to her doctor's appointment. Her stomach was growing rapidly, and Aria had only been pregnant for barely three months.
"I'm so excited! We might find out if it's a boy or a girl today!" Aria exclaimed in the car. I highly doubted that they could tell the baby's gender this early, but it was worth a shot.
"I'm hoping it's a girl," Aria continued, "what about you?"
I honestly didn't care. A big part of me did want a baby boy, but a baby girl would be just as perfect. "I'll be happy no matter what," I say, smiling and stopping at the red light.
"Ezra's been talking nonstop about this job offer he got," Aria said as soon as the light turned green, picking at her chipped manicure.
"What job offer?" I ask. Ezra was a writer for the Rosewood Newspaper, but he wanted to become an actual author one day.
"This... publishing company read some of his work and fell in love with it. They want him to work for them." Aria explained. I noticed that Aria sounded rather distracted. She was being very vague, and it was like she had her mind on other things.
"That's awesome! Where is it?" I ask.
"They want him to work for the Los Angeles Times. We might be moving to California," she finally blurted out.
California? That's thousands of miles away. It'd be different if they had moved to New York, or maybe even Ohio, but California?! I thought they wanted to be a part of the baby's life, too. They are it's real parents, after all.
"California's nice." I finally say, not wanting to get angry with her. I don't want her to have any stress. This pregnancy has to be stress-free.
We made our way into the clinic, and Aria picked up a pregnancy magazine (with a very pregnant woman on the cover), and skimmed through it. "I can't wait until we have this baby," Aria said, sighing and closing the magazine. She began to fan herself with it.
"Mrs. Fitzgerald?" The nurse called. Aria playfully rolled her eyes. Ezra shortened his last name to Fitz, but it wasn't a legal change. He was still legally Ezra Fitzgerald. And Aria was legally Aria Fitzgerald. But they still went by Fitz anyways.
On our way into the secluded room, Aria continued on and on about how excited she was. The doctor asked her a couple questions, and then it was time to see the baby. Aria's grip tightened as the doctor put the cool gel on her protruding stomach.
"I can never get used to that," Aria whispered to me. I laughed a little, but deep down, I wanted to feel that. I know it's odd, wanting to feel that cool gel on my stomach. But it's much more than that. I wanted to see my stomach grow as the months passed by, not Aria's. I wanted to experience the joy and anxiousness in finding out about your baby. It's something I can never truly know about. I still felt a little odd knowing that this baby wasn't going to be truly mine.
"Would you like to know the sex?" The doctor asked. Aria nodded her head energetically, but I stopped her.
"Wait, Toby and Ezra aren't here," I said to her.
"Who cares? We'll tell them when we see them tonight." Aria said, eager to know the baby's gender.
I groaned. Aria was almost as stubborn as me. "Alright." I said.
The doctor, with a big, bright smile on her face, singsonged, "It's a girl!"
