She'd joined us a week ago and was the talk of the camp, wherever I went people were talking about her...

I'll admit I was cautious at first, I found her dark looks and piercing eyes more terrifying than a stern Frederick, I was assigned with her on a few missions.

My first instinct was panic, things were very awkward personality wise but we were a surprisingly good duo,  my quick attacks and her powerful spells were perfectly timed, going in symphony as if we were made for one another.

But back at camp it wouldn't translate, she'd go study more spells without saying a word and I'd go my own way,  training with the other Shepards.

We never even exchanged names until the third battle together, I was locked in and heard a faint "hey, you!" And then just the echo of a boom, when I turned she had completely obliterated a risen that was coming up behind me.

When the battle was over I went over to thank her "thanks for the quick save, if it wasn't for you I'd be dead" "death comes to all of us eventually" she just answered, with a nonchalance I wouldn't associate to such a statement "thanks to you i managed to dodge it today" I said, trying to set a more cheerful mood, something I'd come to find was useless.

"What's your name?" She asked, her head finally lifting from the tome and her cold glaze setting on me "so that maybe next time I can call that out, you is a little vague, you know?" She added while closing her spell book with one hand "I'm y/n, what's yours?" "Tharja" she answered, already walking away.

The rumours about her were running wild, some said she sacrificed humans to get her powers, others that she was still in contact with Gangrel, which might have been reasonable I'll give em that, but my gut was telling me something was behind that girl's gloomy and beautiful facade, and that something wasn't evil.

One day after battle I decided to follow her, not from afar but up close, when she tried to walk away nonchalantly I simply walked beside her "hey, I haven't seen you much around camp" "why? Do you think I'm a spy ?" She coldly answered "no, I was just hoping you found somewhere more peaceful than the barracks, I love my job but there's just too many guys, and they can get rowdy" I said, she must have liked the comment "only if you promise not to disturb my peace too much"

my persona loving  ass: DISTURBING THE PEACEEEEEEEEE

Her tent was distant from everyone else's, she sat down scribbling something as I trained quietly, it sort of became our routine, I'd join her, train with her until dinner time and then I'd go eat with the others, most of our afternoons were quiet, we didn't feel the need to talk, the silence was comforting, not tense, and we sort of got used to each other.

I came to learn she usually ate later to avoid the crowd but by the time she got the food it was already cold, so one evening instead of eating with the rest I got my portion, her portion and brought it up to her tent

"Special delivery" I announced, she looked at me funny, almost confused "elaborate?" "Since you've made enough social-exposure therapy with me I thought we could take it up a notch and eat together" she looked at me than at the stew "why?" She asked, as if the plate could answer her "it's supposed to be eaten hot, especially now that it's cold outside, it can prevent colds, and I want my partner in top form!" I say, trying to ignore the fact I just used the word 'partner'.

"Partner?" She asks "nobody ever called me that..." "wait, you're telling me you've always worked alone?" I asked, handing her a spoon and sitting beside her "yes, I never felt the need to get close to anyone, and they all just let me be, when I fought for the Plegians I fought alone..." she shook her head "I don't remember a single name of the people who should have been my comrades" I gulped down a bite before answering "no wonder you left that hellhole" "not that they treat me much different here, I might change place but the world doesn't" she said, with a glint of sadness in her eyes, only adding "the only thing that changed is you" "hope it was a positive change" she didn't answer, we finished eating in our usual comfortable silence.

One day we were fighting and my knee cracked as I landed a sneak attack on my target, the pain was immediate and piercing, Tharja and I managed to finish off the enemies but she had to turn from valued companion to human crutch to help me get back to camp, spending the rest of the afternoon at the med tent waiting for Lissa.

Today's battle was a relatively easy one thanks to Robin's strategies and luckily most people here in the infirmary with me had minor injuries, when Lissa reached me she said there wasn't much magic could do for broken bones, she gave me a 'herbal' painkiller that probably had more alcohol than Ale and suggested I rest and move using crutches only if strictly necessary, I nod and thank her, the only thing on my mind being Tharja and the fact we can't eat together today, and at least for about another week.

As I was grieving all the lost time with Tharja someone entered the tent, and I shit you not it was her! The same Tharja who has the social mana of a stylit monk is now in a very crowded infirmary, bearing not one but two trays of food "how's your leg stuntman" she asked before I can even ask myself if it was a dream or not she hands me the tray, looking down at my injured knee as she said "figured it would be nice to return the favour, and maybe check to see if you were still crawling amongst the living" "thanks, that's sweet of you" I answered, only now noticed the hint of discomfort in her eyes as the rest of the infirmary looked at us, the chorus of voices growing stronger every second we tried to ignore

"She must have poisoned the food..." "...there must be something behind it..." "...I bet the witch already cursed the poor girl..." "...a filthy plegian, possibly a spy..." "...a monster"

"ENOUGH!"
Before I knew what I was doing I set the tray aside, grabbed a crutch and stood up, getting between Tharja and the rest of them "it hasn't even been ten minutes and you are already gossiping like old cat ladies! Enough with the stupid rumours, if you think you actually think she is a real danger take it up to the next Shepard meeting, if you lack sufficient arguments or simply the balls to do so find something else to gossip about, or better yet, shut the fuck up and use that time to do something useful, like learning some fucking decency!"

The silence that followed was deafening.

"Let's go Tharja" I just said trying to balance the tray in the hand that wasn't holding the crutch, she followed suit and grabbed the tray "you know it's gonna be useless, right? That is the kind of attention I tend to attract" she said, just as we reached her tent "there is no justification for such behaviour, they are bullies and will get what they deserve, Robin and Chrom don't take kindly to that" I replied, sitting on the grass beside her.

"Y/n, it's useless, it's always happened and it will always happen, no matter where I go, I'm the common denominator, I'm the creepy looking dark wizard who can't seem to have normal human interaction and I shouldn't be surprised when people see that" i wanted to scream, this wasn't the first time.

"do you see yourself like that?" I asked, opting for the most direct line of approach "who doesn't" she said with a half laugh, trying to pretend everything was on board "I don't" "then perhaps your pretty eyes need a pair of glasses..."

"Tharja, please, let me tell you what I see" I said holding her hand "you are a force of nature! You're powerful, you saved my ass twice in two weeks, you're resilient, competent and..." the last thing i wanted to say was a gamble but the painkiller was making me too blunt and honest to hold back " and beautiful! Extremely beautiful, the only reason they're talking shit is because they're jealous you won't give them the time of day!" She seemed to feel a bit better, and also kinda shocked

"If you ever have ANY doubts on how awesome you are I'm gonna be here to remind you" she smiled "Lissa must have gone heavy on the painkiller..." "sober thought speak a drunk mind " I answered with all the seriousness I could muster "but me being sober or not doesn't change how incredible and worthy of love you are"
*cough cough this also goes for you dear readers cough cough*
"Thanks y/n..." she said "nope, don't thank me I'm just telling the truth, now about the idiots, do you have any fun I curse we could put on them?" She shook her head "wouldn't this prove their point?" "They have no point, now, can you make them forget where they put things they need?"
