It was your first day attending the day program again and you were dreading the moment you had to cross those doors again. You normally would set up your alarm and wake up independently, but this time you decided not to do it to buy some time in the morning. The night before you waited until everyone was asleep to secretly exercise—trying to make up in advance for what you were going to be forced to eat—finally, at 2:30am you went to sleep.
At 6:15am your mom went to look for you to check that you were up, to her surprise, you were still sleeping. She planned on leaving by 6:30am to get to the center before 7 so she could have a quick chat with Dr. Maine. She approached silently and sat on your bed to wake you up—she shook you slightly.
- "Good morning darling, it's time to wake up"
You just groaned and covered yourself up more.
- "Lizzie, it's time. Come on" she said again.
You didn't move.
- "I'll give you five minutes while I finish straightening my hair, okay? When I come back, I hope you're already showering" Andrea said and left the door open and turned the light on so you would wake up.
But you didn't. You just buried your head inside the covers. Five minutes later your mom was back.
- "Liz, come on" she said sitting down again by your side. - "Wake up"
- "I don't want to go" you said.
Andrea sighted and took off the covers - "But you need to. Come on"
You just shook your head and turned around to not face her.
- "Elizabeth, you already know that this is non-negotiable. You have to go until you're better"
Taylor woke up by the chatter and walked to your room.
- "I'd rather go to school" you said.
- "I know that, but you heard what they said: your health is more important than school, you're not going right now. I already spoke with the school and the only thing you need to worry about now is about recovery" your mom said.
- "I don't need to recover. I am FINE" your shot back.
Andrea got frustrated and pulled the covers completely off from you, throwing them on the floor. - "YOU ARE NOT FINE!" She shouted and left your room to calm herself down.
Your eyes widened with the scream; you watched her as she left but you didn't move. Taylor sat by your side and stroked your hair.
- "I don't want to go, Tay" you whispered crying.
- "Baby..."
- "No! You don't get it" you said louder interrupting her "going there is horrible. There are all these rules and I don't know anyone!"
- "You never know anyone when you first go after a while or even the first time you went, but you eventually end up getting to know the group" Taylor said.
- "You don't get it! You never had to go these places! I am not going" You fought back.
Taylor just sighted—it was true, she never went to recovery centers or inpatient clinics like you did. She went to the hospital once, though. But that was something they never told you back then and she wasn't about to tell you now.
- "I might not get it, and I know it must be very very hard for you, but this is all to help you"
- "I don't want help!" You said crying.
- "You might not see it, but you need it"
- "Why can't I stay here with you and mom, and you help me without going there?"
