Empty Rink

I woke up early, and felt my sore limbs. Thanks Nick and Dylan. Although I didn't want to go downstairs I decided I had to because at least it was early and the others might not be up.

As I got downstairs, I heard a noise and almost walked back upstairs, until my stomach growled. I angrily went into the kitchen with a scowl on my face and saw Dylan, wearing a bright yellow TShirt that said CAMP 4 KIDS on it. Although he definitely wasn't nice to anyone I knew, Dylan was actually really good with kids and sometimes on the weekends to make extra money he would go work at this day camp thing for toddlers. He loved it and the kids loved him... If only they knew. When he saw me he smirked, matching mine, that was "admiring" his ugly outfit. He smiled at me when our eyes met and said "Hey, you're finally up. You know you went to bed at like 8 last night. Was all the wrestling too much to handle?"  I looked away, refusing to answer and heard his chuckle.

I looked in the fridge and found a pudding so decided it might make a good meal. I hopped up on the counter near where Dylan was pouring out his milk in the sink.

"Off to work?" I asked, trying to be polite.

He looked down at his shirt and said "What does it look like, squirt?"

I rolled my eyes and looked away. He checked his watch, cursed, and said "I gotta go!" He gathered his stuff, grabbed his keys, and whipped me with them on my arm as he passed.

"Tell Blake I'm going to work." he said, laughing, as I rubbed my stinging arm.

"Whatever." I answered, looking at my phone.

Suddenly, it buzzed. I looked at my texts and found out Luke had texted me. I felt butterflies swoop in my stomach. I checked it and it said

L : Hey Dakota, can you maybe hang out today at like 8:30?

That was like an hour away! I had no time! And there was no way my brothers would let me!

And yet, I texted back.

D: Hey, yeah that sounds great! What do you wanna do?

L : Maybe, we could go ice skating? A new rink opened right down the street from the school?

D: Haha alright, I'm really bad but we can try at least;)

L : Great! See you then!

Okay, here comes the real challenge. Escaping the house.

I snuck up to my room and looked in to see Blake. He was sleeping in his bed, passed out. Maybe, if I came back before 10, he would still be sleeping?I would hope, because I was going and there was no way I was asking anyone. I got dressed in my cutest cold weather clothes and ran outside, to walk to the rink. I found it easily, and walked inside. Luke got there a little later.

"Hey!" he said. "Hi!" I yelled back, too excitedly.

We payed for our tickets, laced up some skates, and went into the cold indoor rink.

As we walked on to the rink I slipped on a broken patch of ice and  almost fell, in the first second. Luckily, his warm and  strong hand grabbed mine.

"I thought you were kidding when you said you were bad!" he laughed.

"Nope." I answered, grabbing his hand tighter. We started going slowly together, in sync almost. There was nobody there, and nice, calm songs were playing. We held hands and kept sliding around. I almost slipped a couple times but Luke always caught me. He laughed it off every time and I tried to, too. We talked about skating and he told me he actually used to play hockey as a kid. No wonder he was so good at it! We wrapped around the rink about a hundred times and then went to the snack room, in the upstairs floor. I sat at a table and he came back a minute later with two hot cocoas and cookies.

I thanked him, and tried to devour mine slowly and we talked a little.

We talked about our families, and he told me about his little sister, Ava, and his parents who seemed so nice!

Then, he asked me more about mine. I decided to actually tell him.

"Well, basically, my parents... passed away a few years ago... and my older brother Blake raises me." I said, slightly mumbling. He looked at me from under his dark eyelashes.

"I'm sorry about your parents." Luke said, looking into my eyes.  "But thats pretty nice of your brother!" he said, thinking of the positive.

"I guess." I said, thinking of Blake sleeping and missing me.

"I mean, my brothers all kind of helped raise me but because of that, they have some killer mama bear instincts." I admitted, as her chuckled. "They are all super protective and because of that, they end up hurting me a lot!" I told him, feeling glad someone finally knew.

"That reminds me, we should probably go soon." I said, "My brothers will miss me." He said of course, and grabbed my hand as I struggled to get up because my legs were now used to skating.  He kept holding it as we walked to his moms car, and I was introduced. She seemed very sweet, calling me honey and sugar, and they dropped me off at my house at around 11:00. I waved goodbye as I left his car and he waved back. I couldn't contain my smile so I looked like a maniac as I crept to the door, and slowly pressed down on the handle so as to not make any noise. I took my first step slowly inside and looked up to see the faces of three very pissed bothers.

"WHAT were you DOING?" demanded Blake.

"Ummm.... going for a walk?" I lied.
