Life is full of distractions.
Full of life and light, laughter, smooth, soft, easy
one quick moment can tear the seams
when you realize that you are distracting yourself
everyone always is
jobs and school and friends and families
hobbies and passions and events and mechanisms
that allow us to hide from the shadows in our minds.
The shadows that will always be there, because there is always a part that the sun can't light.
It is easy to find the light and bask
text a friend, find a show, start a drawing, read a book
it is easy to feel the warmth when you are laughing with the people who make you feel like you might not be alone.
But when morning comes and the moon doesn't light up the sky and the stars don't feel like climbing into your vision,
and you take away the consciousness
of the people who give you common sense
and help you hide from yourself
when you need it,
all you have is you.
The electricity and the signals dashing, dancing, singing
all to the tune of your insomnia
and you are finally alone with your thoughts, because you don't have a toy to play with or a person to tell about your day.
you have you, and a constant reminder of the lock that keeps you in mind and every other person on this planet out of it.
It is easy to ignore the shadows in the daylight, to the tune of your favorite song or the click of a camera in a beautiful scene or the text of a friend inviting you out to laugh and catch each other up on the new turnings of your worlds.
When morning comes, and the sky is dark, sometimes the moon won't shine, or you choose to close your curtain because you don't think seeing it glow is worth it.
Without distractions, the shadows move. They might be always there, but then you can't choose not to focus on them.
Without distractions, the shadows grow.
