Maya's POV
"Do you have tweezers on you?" he let out a frustrated huff.
We had now been sitting on the couch in the hallway for about 5 minutes. Half at least were consumed by Josh's extreme effort to remove the tiny piece of glass from my finger.
"Yea, sure let me just whip it out of my back pocket," I sarcastically spat, snatching my hand from his grasp so I could pretend to be getting it for him. "Oh, wait. I don't have any pockets," I looked at him pointedly.
"Oh shit. Maya," Josh aimed his finger at the floor just behind me and my eyes complied with his direction. "You dropped you sass," he said in a serious tone. "It seems to be all over the place."
I narrowed my eyes and pressed my lips together, "That wasn't even that good of a delivery Matthews." I lied. I mean, it wasn't perfect, but I had to admit that I was choking back a few giggles.
"Fine. Good luck getting that sucker out," he propped his hands on the seat cushion and propped himself up.
"Wait," the word pouring out of my mouth without even a second thought. I seized his hand with my non-maimed hand. My hand felt microscopic in his, vulnerable even.
Josh's POV
I bent my left leg on the couch and stretched my right one out to the floor so that I still had a little grasp of reality. I told Maya I wouldn't keep bothering her and pressuring her...I wanted to be able to keep my promise. She deserved better than words, she deserved a man. A man that is gonna prove that his words have some value to them. That was the least I could do. At least for the girl that I was crazy about. I angled myself so that I was facing her again. The hallway was still and soundless besides the muffled voices and music in the other room.
Maya must have realized she held onto my hand for too long because she suddenly released my hand.
But instead of my thoughts relaxing, my heart continued to beat out of control at the thought and side of this blonde girl that was sitting in front of me..
"I'll go see if one of the other girls has one," she gently patted my thigh twice before letting that linger too. Her touch sent electrical currents through my body.
Her fingers curled, she removed her hand, stood up, and headed back to the dining room of the venue.
Instantaneously I was awake even after the tiring day we had. She was like a shot of espresso waking me up from even the most mundane days. Not that today was necessarily mundane. I scrunched my eyebrows together. But that was what baffled me most. The rest of the day seemed so mundane in comparison to Maya's intoxicating presence. She was the caffeine pumping through my veins, she was sobering.
Maya reappeared again a few moments later. This time, with tweezer and two drinks that she didn't have before. "Smackle had a pair in her emergency kit in her purse. Plus, I brought reinforcements," she smiled weakly. "I might need a drink considering this is probably gonna hurt pretty bad, huh?" I held the drinks up high and then let out a sigh.
I gave her a sympathetic smile, "Yea probably, but I'll do my best keep it as quick and painless as possible.
I knew Maya didn't like when people lied or sugar-coated stuff, so I didn't bother trying to deceive her.
"Cheers," she said handing me my drink without identifying it.
I clinked her glass and took a hard gulp of it before sitting it on the ground beside me. Whatever it was, was delicious and smooth and just strong enough to make my buzz return.
"Okay. I'm ready," Maya extended her arm so that her hand was hovering over my left thigh. It was the same one that she had touched before, and I would be lying if I said that it wasn't still numb from our contact before.
