"Someone woke up in the wrong side of the bed." Mom said.
I looked at them. "What?"
"You look like you're about to kill your phone. Is everything alright?" She asked.
"Y-yeah." I said.
"C'mon, honey." Dad said.
"Manu isn't texting me. I don't know if he's coming tonight." I said with annoyance.
Samantha chuckled. "You're overacting. Of course he's going to come. You're going to celebrate your anniversary." She stuck her tongue.
I rolled my eyes and chuckled. "Yeah, maybe I'm overreacting."
Mom was about to say something, but the door bell rang. We looked at our door.
"I'll get it." Mom stood up.
I was on my phone when I heard voices.
"We weren't expecting you." Mom said.
"Who's with mom?" I asked.
Samantha and Dad shrugged. We felt intrigued so we stood up and walked outside.
I was shocked when I saw Manu's family.
"Kirby!" Mrs. Fernandez gave me a hug.
I couldn't say a word. I didn't know they were coming.
"Are you okay?" Josemy asked while laughing.
"I...y-yeah." I chuckled, awkwardly. "Where's Manu?" I asked.
Josemy's smile faded. "He didn't tell you?" He asked.
"What do you mean?"
"He had some errands to do. He's in New York right now." He said.
I pretended I wasn't hurt that Manu didn't tell me.
"Oh, okay." I faked a smile.
Mom touched my shoulder. "Let's go inside?"
When we were all in the living room, I excused myself.
I went to my room. I laid down and stared at the ceiling.
Why didn't Manu tell me?
I groaned and dialed Manu's number. After the third ring, he answered.
"Hey, Kirby." He said.
I did my best to sound calm.
"Your family's here." I said.
"Y-yeah."
"Why aren't you with them? I texted you many times, but you didn't respond. Josemy told me that you're in New York?! I thought we're going to spend our anniversary." Okay, I suck at being calm.
He kept quiet.
"Why won't you tell me? I expected you to be here, Manu. You were even the one who kept insisting that your family should spend New Year with us."
"I'm sorry." He said.
I closed my eyes as my hand balled into fist.
"Why can't you just tell me the truth? I would understand."
"I don't want to disappoint you."
