Two weeks later...

Annie's POV

We were at the house when the doorbell rang. Gail yelled for someone to answer it, and I was in the living room, so I did. There was a police officer.

"Hello. May I speak to Gail Winston please?" She said.

"Uh, sure," I said. "GAIL! There's a lady that wants to talk to you!"

She jogged to the door, and I went upstairs.

Gail's POV

"Yes, officer?" I said.

"Show me your house's bill record," She said.

"Oh, okay," I said.

I went to the kitchen and grabbed my records.

"Here you go," I said.

"Your water and electric bills aren't on time," She said.

"Huh, I paid them two days ago," I recalled, confused.

"I need to inspect your house," She said.

"Okay?" I said hesitantly.

I lead the officer around the house, and she was frowning, but I don't know why. I took her to meet the kids.

"I need to take the all the kids. Your house is not up to standards," The officer said.

I walked upstairs and into the girls' room.

"Look, I had no clue, but the house apparently isn't up to standards. You have to leave. Please pack," I said, starting to tear up.

Hayley's POV

I can't believe we have to leave! We all packed our clothes and toys. Avery double checked for her soccer ball, and the twins made sure they had their jump ropes.

We all got in a big black van with eight back seats. We drove for a long, boring hour to a large building called Elliswood Orphanage. We all got really scared because of the name, but it was pretty nice inside. It was painted with happy colors. We sat in folding chairs, waiting for directions on what to do.

"This is only a temporary home for Hayley, Annie, Lily, and Annalise. In Avery and Soph's case, this is your new home," A lady said.

"Great," I heard Avery mutter under her breath.

We went to the second floor and there were three large bedrooms grouped by age. Sadly, Annie and I weren't together. Room A was for six to nine year olds, room B is for ten to thirteen year olds, and room C is for fourteen to sixteen year olds. I was in room A, and Annie was in room B.

Annie and I stayed at the place for a week, then we got in another car and headed to another home.
