Hayley's POV

We sat on the living room couch talking, then we heard the door open. Annie and I ran to the basement and sat around the corner from the stairs. We heard footsteps going up the stairs. Who is that person? I hope they aren't hostile!

Giana's POV

I swear I heard someone in the basement. Anyway, I put down my backpack in my room, and I saw two other backpacks. So there IS someone else here. They can't chase me off though. At least it's nice to know I'll have someone to talk to. . . as long as the people are friendly.

I made a bold move and walked into the basement.

"Hello? Who are you? Please come out, I'm friendly!" I called as I went down the stairs.

Two girls peeked their heads around the corner. They looked scared.

"Hey, I'm Annie, and my little sister is Hayley," The taller girl said, as she completely came out from behind the wall.

"Hi. . ," Hayley said hesitantly.

"I'm Giana. I'm eleven, and my parents and younger sister abandoned me here. They just. . . left me at our house, alone. So I guess it's my house now," I said sadly.

"Well, Hayley is nine, and I'm thirteen. Our mom lost custody of us when we were twelve and eight, so we had three foster homes, then our mom got partial custody of us, and we were switching between mom's house and our last foster home. A few days after our mom got full custody, she started drinking, and she drank too much one night, and abandoned us a few hours from here. We're trying to walk home, but could you let us stay here for a while, please?" Annie said.

"Of course! You can stay in my sister's old room, or on the couch," I said.

I'm glad they're sticking around, so then I'll have someone to talk to!
