Hayley's POV
Ava and Martine put the canoes away and they then brought us into their house.
"Welcome to our vacation house. It has two guest rooms that you can put your stuff in. There's also bathrooms attached to them. We've got extra towels and toiletries too, if you want to take showers," Ava said.
"Thank you so much!" Annie smiled. She turned to Sapphire and Luca. "One of you two can take a shower first."
"You can go first, Lukie," Sapphire said.
"Thanks!" He smiled.
"I'll show all of you the guest rooms," Ava said.
"Oh, can Abbie stay here?" Ans asked.
"Yeah, sure," Ava nodded.
"I'll stay with her," I said.
Ava took the others upstairs while I sat next to Abbie on the couch.
"Hey Abbie Jacks, how are you?" I asked her, trying to break the silence.
"Kinda good. I miss my friends though. And it's the New Year now," Abbie said.
"Aww yeah, me too— wait, what?" I said. Did she say what I think she said?
"It's the New Year. It's January first," she smiled.
"Wow, you remembered the date! Happy 2034, Abbs," I smiled
"Happy 2034, Auntie Hayley," Abbie giggled.
"Hey, Martine?" I called into the kitchen. "Is there cell service here?"
"No. But if you turn on WiFi calling on your phone, I can give you the password to the WiFi and you can call that way," she responded.
"Thanks!" I yelled back.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and turned it on. Surprisingly, it wasn't cracked or anything, and it still had 40% battery.
I switched on WiFi calling and Martine told me the WiFi password. I was able to call my parents.
"Hello?" My mom answered.
"Hey mom!" I said.
"Hi Hayley! Happy new year! We haven't heard from you or Annie in a while. Is everything okay?"
"Well, when we were on the plane back from Florida yesterday—and don't panic, we're okay—the plane crashed. We found help and we have food and water and shelter. We'll probably call the police in a few minutes."
"Oh my gosh! Well, I'm glad you're okay. What about the crash, though? Are there other people?"
"Well, uhh, we are the only survivors."
"Oh no!"
"Well, do you want to talk to Abbie?" I asked. I noticed Abbie was looking bored and had been biting her nails.
"Sure!" Mom said.
I put the phone on speaker.
"Hi Abbie!" Mom said. Abbie's face lit up.
"Hi Mimi!" She smiled.
"How are you?" She asked.
"I'm kinda good. I miss my friends. Also, my leg kinda hurts," Abbie said.
I remembered that Abbie needed Advil or something like it.
I got up and walked into the kitchen, where Martine had been making pasta so the kids could eat.
"Do you have any kids ibuprofen?" I asked.
"Yeah, like the chewy Advil tablets," Martine nodded her head. "It's in the first cabinet on the left."
I took out the bottle and read the directions. I took out one tablet and put the bottle back.
I gave Abbie the tablet.
"Here's some Advil. It'll help your knee," I told her.
"What happened to her knee?" Mom asked.
"She, uh, dislocated it," I explained.
"What?! Is it still crooked?" Mom asked.
"Well, Allie put it back in place. We're just hoping she did it right so it heals correctly," I said.
"I love you Mimi!" Abbie shouted at the phone.
Mom laughed. "Okay Abbie! Love you too."
"Bye mom," I said, hanging up.
