Hayley's POV

Annie and I were still walking for a while after lunch, and I remembered something I learned in science camp.

"Annie! I know how to make a compass! I need a paper clip, wax paper, and a plastic cup with warm water!" I said excitedly.

"Hayley, the only thing we have out of that list is the water. We could try something though. I don't think it will work, but we could try substituting the paper clip for a bobby pin, wax paper for regular paper, and a cup for a water bottle," Annie suggested.

We stopped and got to work. We heated the water with a small fire, and I scraped the black plastic off the bobby pin so I could get the metal exposed to get an electric current. Annie carefully tore the paper into a circle. She held the circle while I poked the straightened pin through the middle. I gently placed it on top of the water. The pin moved back and forth, then settled on a direction.

"Great! That's North!" I said, pointing the way the pin was pointing towards.

"Which means Maryland is that way!" Annie said excitedly.

Then we got big grins on our faces, but then I realized something.

"Maryland could be south though. We could be in Delaware," I pointed out.

"Let's trust our guts. Mine says we're in Virginia. This looks like Virginia," Annie said.

"How do you know what Virginia forests look like?" I said with some sass.

"Like I said, trust your gut," Annie shrugged.

I agreed with her though. My gut did say we were in Virginia. We headed north for about and hour when we came upon an abandoned house. We adventurously went inside and checked it out. It looked abandoned, but I think it was abandoned just a month or so ago. It still looked well kept. We settled down in the house. We tested the heating and AC, and it didn't work. Then we tested the fireplace, stove, oven, and water, and the water actually worked! We taste-tested it, and it tasted fine. The stove and oven didn't work, but the fireplace did. It wasn't a real fireplace, but an electronic one, surprisingly.

We walked up the stairs to the bedrooms. We went to the master bedroom first. The closets were barren and so were the bathroom counters and cabinets. Then, we went to the kids rooms. The two rooms, conjoined by a bathroom, were both painted pink. One room was bare (except for furniture), and in the other room had clothes in the closet, and it looked like someone was living in it.

Little did we know, someone WAS living in it.

Go check out my new book guys! It's called Bucket List, and its themed off of a shaytards book (same name) by @shaytards_love and all credit goes to them.
