Allie's POV
"Hurry Al Jay, you're going to be late!" Mom called upstairs.
Shoot, I had just gotten out of bed. I just had to close my eyes for one more second. . . .
I threw on a random shirt, jeans, and sweatshirt I grabbed out of my closet. I quickly shoved on my sneakers without tying them and grabbed some icebreaker's mints, threw them in my mouth, and finger-combed my hair while grabbing my backpack. I sprinted down the steps, took an apple from the fruit basket, and jumped in the car.
"I made it!" I announced.
"I think that's your record," Hayley smiled.
"Me too! Five minutes. I don't think I'll be late to school this time!" I said.
We reached the middle school within a few minutes, and Hayley dropped me out front.
"See you later! Wait, don't you have the tryouts for the cheerleading team today?" She asked.
"Yep! I can't believe they didn't get enough girls that were good from the high school, so they're asking the eighth grade. Gotta run though!" I yelled over my shoulder while sprinting into school.
I ran to my locker, ignoring the teachers telling me to slow down, and I got my books. I ended up making it in time for my first class.

"Okay! For anyone who wants to try out today, sign up on this sheet! We'll call you when we're ready for you," One of the captains on the team said, taping a sheet on the wall and then walking into the gym.
I pushed my way through the crowd of girls and lucky me, I was seventh. I went over to another side of the hallway and stretched how Hayley showed me. Then, I practiced the six eight-count dance Hayley taught me, since we needed to have a dance prepared with at least four eight-counts.
Soon enough, I heard the one of the captains call "Allie Jade Leblanc?".
I stepped into the gym. They had a deadmat on the ground, and there were four cheerleaders sitting at a table, with paper and pens. Their coach sat on the far end of the table.
"So, your name is. . ?" one asked.
"Allie Jade Leblanc, and I'm fourteen years old," I answered.
"Cool. Have you ever done a sport similar to cheer, like dance or gymnastics?" She asked.
"My older sisters are a dancer and a gymnast, and we go to open gym and they help teach me tumbling. They also help me with my splits and jumps," I told them.
"That's great. Can we see your dance and toe-touch?" She asked.
"Sure." I did them and then I left.
A few days later, they announced who made the team on the school website.
The Severna Park Middle School eighth graders that made the cheer team at WSHS:
Chloe Lenagh
Patricia Parkings
Rachel Quintel
Allie Jade Leblanc
Ellie KumarYes! I made it!
"HAYLEY HAYLEY HAYLEY!" I screamed.
"What?" She came into my room.
"I made the team!" I exclaimed.
"That's great!!!" She said.
"I know! I never thought I'd be able to do something like this," I said to myself.

Later that day, I had decided it was time. I picked up my phone and dialed the number on the slip of paper.
I was finally calling my mom.
My birth mom.
She had said she would come back and get me.
Yet she never did.
I was really doing it.
Calling the woman I hadn't spoken to in so many years.
I pressed the green button.
Two rings later, she answered.
