Summary: Songfic: New Rules by Dua Lipa

Talkin' in my sleep at night
Makin' myself crazy
(Out of my mind, out of my mind)
Wrote it down and read it out
Hopin' it would save me
(Too many times, too many times)
Oh, she makes me feel like nobody else
Nobody else
But my love, she doesn't love me
So I tell myself, I tell myself

Santana felt like she was going crazy. It felt like she was going through withdrawal. She needed her. She loved the feeling of her lips on her. Her body against hers. Everything was just so amazing. She craved it. She couldn't have it. She had to forget her.

One, don't pick up the phone
You know she's only calling 'cause she's drunk and alone

She could hear her phone ringing. She wanted to run for it and answer it. She resisted that urge. She was just her rebound. She always ran to her when she was lonely. Santana was always pushed to the side when she had someone else to be with. She knew that if she ever wanted Santana that she was one call away and she could have her. Not anymore.

Two, don't let her in
You have to kick her out again

She couldn't invite her over. She couldn't even text her. The moment she did it was all over. She would regret her the next morning. She leaves but she knew that Santana would always come back to her. It was a never-ending cycle. She was going to put a stop to it.

Three, don't be her friend
You know you're gonna wake up in her bed in the morning
And if you're under her
You ain't getting over her

She had tried to be her friend. She wanted to cling onto her desperately. She had to have her in life. It didn't work out. She woke up naked next to her the next to her. The one thing she had been trying to avoid. She had tried so desperately to get over her but every time she slept with her she'd be back to square one. Hopelessly in love with the one person who could never love her back.

I've got new rules, I count 'em
I've got new rules, I count 'em
I've gotta tell them to myself
I've got new rules, I count 'em
I've gotta tell them to myself

I keep pushin' forwards
But she keeps pullin' me backwards
(Nowhere to turn, no way)
(Nowhere to turn, no)
Now I'm standing back from it
I finally see the pattern
(I never learn, I never learn)
But my love, she doesn't love me
So I tell myself, I tell myself
I do, I do, I do

She kept running back. She'd always find herself in the same situation. A cycle she could never break free of. She was going to try her damn hardest to break it. She wasn't going to allow herself to go back to her. She didn't love her. She just uses her. It's what keeps her from picking up her phone. She was just there for a good fuck and nothing else. It was time for her to move on even if it hurt. Even if it killed her.

Practice makes perfect
I'm still tryna' learn it by heart
Eat, sleep, and breathe it
Rehearse and repeat it 'cause I (I, I, I)

One, don't pick up the phone
You know she's only calling 'cause she's drunk and alone
Two, don't let her in
You have to kick her out again
Three, don't be her friend
You know you're gonna wake up in her bed in the morning
And if you're under her
You ain't getting over her

I've got new rules, I count 'em
I've got new rules, I count 'em
I've gotta tell them to myself
I've got new rules, I count 'em (baby you know I count 'em)
I've gotta tell them to myself
Don't let her in, don't let her in
Don't be her friend, don't be her friend
Don't let her in, don't let her in
Don't be her friend, don't be her friend
You ain't getting over her

Every time she called she reminded herself of the rules. She wrote them down a thousand times. She could recite them by memory. Still, she found herself in her bed again and again and again.
It had been three weeks since she had last seen her and she was growing weak. She kept telling herself to stay strong. She needed to get clean. The phone rang once again. She ignored it. Just a couple more days. A couple more days and she'd be free.

Hey guys! This popped into my head while I was listening. I changed the pronouns to make it apply to Santana better.
I left 'her' opened ended. It could Brittany. It could be Quinn. It could be Rachel. It's whoever you want it to be. It could even be an original character if you wanted it to be.
Hope y'all like it.
