The Siren's Lament

It was almost midnight when the singing started.

Zane was making his way home on his bicycle, just ending his shift at the coffee shop where he worked part-time. The singing startled him to death, making him bring the bike to a stop by a streetlight. Leaning the bike against the pole, he made his way to the fence that overlooked the ocean. Something about the singing was different from any song or musical sound that Zane had ever heard in his entire life... not even the song that Travis wrought for him could compare to this.

It was... calling to him... the ocean was calling to him... (Holy crapola this has become Moana--)

Putting one hand on the railing, Zane leaned over to look down at the waves. They were a darker blue in the darkness of the night, crashing up against the rocky sides. Zane let out a small sigh, feeling a smile creep onto his lips.

The railing broke.

Zane screamed out in both shock and fear, falling over the now open side of the cliff. His bag caught onto one of the pipes from the railing, but it slipped right off of his shoulders. She plummeted down towards the ocean waves, screaming the entire way down. He stared at the full moon, taking quick breaths as he got close to the water. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eye, fearing that it would be his last.

~~~~
His heart was beating.
How was that possible? Zane couldn't feel the air against his skin... so where was he?
Opening his eye slowly, Zane could see the different shades of blue. He was sprawled out on a pile of dark green seaweed, some of the water a reddish color from a healing wound on his forearm. Wait... was that a tail!?
Shooting upright, Zane looked at his lower body. Indeed, he had a tail. Replacing his pale legs was a black fish tail with a dark blue fin. Zane stared at it in shock and misery. He had quite liked his legs and being able to walk, despite him being the lazy man he was.
What happened to him? Why was he a... a Merman?
"You're awake."
Zane looked around the room, before spotting another Merman near what he assumed to be the entrance.
The Merman had a cold, hawkish look on his face. From the curve of his lips, sharp teeth that resembled fangs were visible. His eyes were a cold teal, and made Zane freeze in his place. His hair was a lot darker than Zane's was, being pitch black and having a silky shine to it. His tail was black as well, but it had a teal colored fin. Tied around the waist, where his human half met his fish half, was a cloth of black and gray. His arms and chest had a muscular build to them, and he looked like he could easily grab Zane's neck and snap it like a twig.
"I guess you're not much of a talker." He continued, going up to Zane and eyeing him. "Relatable... very relatable."
Zane opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. He wasn't even sure if he could talk the same way he did when he was human. The Merman must have noticed this, because he just shook his head.
"You must be wondering where you are and what is happening..." He went one, swishing his tail. "Well, for starters, you're in the ocean. You're also a Siren."
Zane couldn't tell what his main emotion was at that moment. Amazement that he was something... someone... new? Fear for what lied in this new world? Anger for what happened to him? Sadness for never being able to return to his mother?
The Merman, or Siren, had a mischievous smirk on his face. It soon drifted down to a stern frown, as he eyed Zane once again. He looked... disappointed, maybe even confused.
"Your reaction is different than the others..." He frowned at the raven haired Siren. "Still, I love seeing the faces of humans when they get told that."
The male Siren went over to a stone slab lodged into the wall, where a black cloth was layed out. The only reason it wasn't floating in the water was because it was being pinned down by small rocks.
Zane reached up slowly to trace what was hidden beneath his mask. Or... what would have been hidden.
"I understand why you hide your face." The Siren chuckled darkly.
Zane, clearly, knew what the male Siren was talking about. He reached up slowly, only this time his fingers lightly brushed against the surface of his cheek. It was there that one of his two birthmarks were placed; on his cheek, and the other one on his lower back. The birthmark on his cheek also had a long scar going across it, which only added to the features that he had come to hate about himself.
"My name is Gene, if you're wondering." The Siren introduced himself.
"Z.. Zane.." Zane coughed out.
"Zane... cute name." Gene smirked again, only this one said more than just mischievous intentions. "I have a feeling you'll come to like me."
Zane, however, had a feeling that he would dread more than his new life.
