Gene was hesitant when opening the door.
He had been on his way home from dinner at a fancy restaurant, when he saw an adorable little puppy. He had gotten out of the car to go and pet it, when he realized it didn't have an owner, as there was no collar around his neck. But the puppy needed help. He was limping, whimpering, and had various wounds, not to mention how thin he was. The poor thing had tried to bite him, and kept backing away, his entire body violently shaking as Gene tried to approach him.
Kneeling beside the tub was his friend, Aphmau. She was always good with calming people, of any species, down to a relaxed point. Then she took care of them however they needed. Her sleeves were rolled up, with white gloves on her hands and a sponge in one of them. Her ring was placed on the counter, so that it didn't go down the drain somehow or cut her or the puppy.
The puppy was slumbed over, whimpering lightlly as his lip quivered and his tail pointed down. He would wince whenever the sponge washed over one of his bruises or cuts, both of which reined over his body. His skeleton was so visible beneath the skin, his ribs and spinal cord.. it was disgusting.
Silently, Gene closed the door again. He didn't want to walk in and startle the puppy back into fear... he didn't want him toi get hurt anymore than he already was.
Waiting for them was boring, but Gene would tolerate it. He had plenty of entertainment devices, like Netflix (and Chill), a PlayStation 4, an XBox One, Nintendo Switch, and so on. Hell, he even had an entire room dedicated to video games. Even so, he couldn't take his mind off of the puppy. He didn't want to take his mind off of him.
He looked up when he heard footsteps coming down the hall, and saw Aphmau, holding the puppy with tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Aph?" Gene asked in a low whisper, his eyes wide.
"It's him, Gene.." She whispered in overhwleming emotion, running her fingers through the black locks of hair on the puppy's head. "It's Zane.. he's still alive, after all this time..."
Zane, the boy no one had seen since his freshman year, was right in front of him. His body had hardly grown from that chubby, premature figure in freshman year. But it had noticeably changed, only for the worse.
"By Irene... he's so broken..." Gene whispered, horror stricken. "What did those men do to you...?"
Aphmau shook her head, setting Zane down on the couch. She went over to her purse and grabbed her phone, calling Garroth immediately. Gene couldn't help but stare at Zane, who lay sleeping on one of his couches.
"Garroth will be here in a few minutes." Aphmau informed him, placing a hand on Zane's forehead. "I don't know if he's bringing Laurance or not."
"Oh right, I nearly forgot they were a thing recently." Gene joked, sitting down. "Don't they have a kid already?"
"Two, actually. They have two sons." She answered, smiling faintly. "Garroth says he wants another son, but he isn't sure if Laurance is willing to be pregnant for another nine months."
"At this rate he'll hurt the poor thing." He added, shaking his head.
"At least they truly love each other." She sighed.
Gene nodded, looking back at Zane. He looked so broken and alone, so damaged and defeated. But he would help him. He would help him become whole again, no matter the price.

Gene couldn't sleep that night.
He kept tossing and turning, and every time he would close his eyes, the image of Zane being so broken popped back up. It got to the point where he had completely given up, and was now sitting up in his bed, just staring at the wall. He knew very well how late it was, and that turning on the television could awaken Aphmau or Zane quite easily. More so Zane than Aphmau, but it wasn't worth the risk.
