I am struggling Rn I feel sick lol but that's okay but I got it.
Also this is basically a transition timeline oneshot. I've done these before, so don't get mad about Patty/Patton/Pat's pronouns changing as they discover themself. Okay? Okay :)
STORYTIME!
☀️
It's naptime at Sanders Kindergarten. Little five year old Virgil held the hand of six year old Patty. She leaned her head on his shoulder, and Virgil elf before butterflies fluttering around in his stomach. It's maybe halfway through the year, after winter break, and the room was cold. Patty cuddled next to Virgil for warmth. Virgil smiled as he watched her sleep. He always had trouble taking naps, so he spent his naptime siting there and watching her breathe. He'd watch her breathe for nearly half an hour.
"Virgil, do you wanna color with me while we wait for naptime to be over?"
"Shhhhhh! Patty's asleep! Nobody is gonna wake her up on my watch!"
Virgil puffed out his little chest, defending his best friend from the loud kid Roman, who Virgil was also friends with. Roman huffed and rolled his eyes, crawling over the napping mats to go play with his twin brother and his friend Logan. Virgil watched him go back before returning all his attention back To the lovely best friend resting peacefully on his shoulder. Just having Patty right there by him made him so happy.
Was this a crush?

There's no more naptime at Sanders Middle School. Patton had tried coming out as trans, using he/him pronouns. Most of their friends left them, but Patton will always have Virgil by his side supporting him. Virgil may have anxiety, but it was worth it to protect Patton from behind hurt. They were best friends forever! Patton helped him with schoolwork and they played after school together and had sleepovers. The least he could do was protect him, especially while he slept.
Patton's head rested on Virgil's shoulders, his gossses slipping off of the bridge of his nose. Virgil chuckled to himself as he let out a few little snores, making sure he was quiet and didn't burden anyone. Virgil leaned himself against the window, giving Patton a stable human pillow that he could always rely on. It was the one thing his overly pudgy pale self can be useful for something. Fat m00d right there.
"Hey, can y'all stop being heckin Gay? It's making my girlrfirend very uncomfortable."
"Shhhh! He's sleeping! And I don't care about it. Your girkefirned can just fuckin deal with it man. Doesn't make me any less gay."
Virgil glared still Him as he slumped back down in the seat in front of them. He grumbled to his girlfriend about it, but Virgil didn't give a shit. Clearly the girlfriend didn't think that way either. He just made that entire thing up. Virgil rolled his eyes and looked over at the sleeping Patton. Was he smiling now? How precious. He must be having a good dream. Virgil will do everything he can to stay vigilant and protect this ball of sunshine from the horrible outside world.
What did he dream about?
🍭
Virgil watched as Patton let themself drift off to sleep in the passenger's seat of Virgil's Jeep Wrangler. Only the best jeep or our boi. It was a thunderstorm on a Saturday night and Patton had just asked for the two to go out to their secret spot on the hill away from the town. Patton had just come out as their true self: NonBinary. Their pronouns are they/them and they have finally figured out what their body was telling them. Now they're finally themself. Virgil had never been prouder.
There was nobody to shush, nobody to keep quiet. Virgil pursed his lips together, debating wether he should start talking. Patton began letting out small snores, leaning their chair back and crossing their hands over their chest as though they were cuddling one of their stuffed animals. Virgil smiled to himself, quietly begining to vent his feelings out to the sleeping NonBinary lovely who they care for more than anyone.
"I'm proud of you, Pat. You've been through so much and you've finally found a set of pronouns and a label you can be proud of. Your happiness always and forever means the most to me. I... I'm just happy that you can find a place where you can be happy. I don't care if I'm nothing but a best friend to you, I will always support you and love you."
"Virgil, Shhh. It's okay. I love you too."
Virgil flinched and whipped his head to the side, halting the car at a newly turned red light when that happened. They were so lucky that there was nobody else crazy enough to be on the road during a tropical storm at eleven o'clock at night in Florida. Pat had their seat raised and their delicate, lovely hand was rested on Virgil's shoulder. Fondness and care reflected in their eyes. Any anxiety swelling up inside Virgil instantly faded away. Silence filled the car for s moment, breathing overtaking all sound, even in the pouring rain.
"I believe that love takes work and love takes dedication. You have always cared for me and been there for me. I... I thought the butterflies I felt were wrong because we were best friends and I dated Roman for a year but... yeah. I love you Virgil. I-"
"Shhh, rest Pat. I'm going to take you home and then we can talk tomorrow. I'm sure thst you're emotionally drained."
"...I love you."
"I love you too."

Patton was confused when they felt a Wright's in their shoulder. They were just reading a bedtime story to their lovely three year old daughter on the couch. Patton laughed softly when they saw their husband dead asleep, resting on them. The daughter say this and giggled, but Pat held a finger in front of their lips.
"Shhh, it's time to tuck Daddy into bed. Then we can finish our story."
Pat shifted Virgil so that he could be the one on the couch tonight, their lovely daughter can sleep with them tonight. You know, cuddles! :) Pat covered Virgil with the blankets and their daughter pressed a big kiss on her Daddy's face. Virgil smiled in his sleep and tried to flutter his eyes open, but they were far too heavy. Pat ran their hand through his hair tenderly, making sure that he knows he is loved.
"Goodnight Daddy! Love youuuuu!"
"Goodnight, Love. We'll see you in the morning."
Virgil stopped fighting the sleepytime junction. He laid back and kept his eyes closed, letting his family envelop him with blankets and love. After they were done and turned out the lights, Pat's daughter wrapped her tint hand around their index and middle fingers and they walked upstairs together. It was their turn to shush and go to sleep.
Patton could never ask for better.
