Day 10: Gen X Reader - Misunderstandings

Y/N's Pov

Misunderstandings.

I hated that word.

It meant that someone took something the wrong way.

So when I got home from school, I was immediately confronted with a misunderstanding.

Well, not immediately.

I was having dinner with my family, which consisted of both my parents, my sister and my 2 brothers.

"So, when are you going to invite him over?" My mum asked.

I looked at her confused as I put my fork down.

"Who?" I asked.

"Oh you know, your boyfriend." Mum said and heads shot up to look at me.

I almost choked on my food.

"Boyfriend? When did you hear about this?" I asked.

"Oh, Serene was talking to me about it earlier this week and I'm surprised that you never told us about your boyfriend." My mum said and I could feel my brothers and father staring at me and Serene had the smuggest look on my face.

"Yeah, because why would I?" I asked.

"You are bringing this boy over on Friday. I want to meet him." My dad said.

We ate dinner in silence after that statement and that made me stressed.

The next day, I met up with Gen at school.

"Hey Gen!" I greeted as I smiled at him.

"Hey." Gen said, giving me a wave.

I still was stressed and didn't talk as much as I usually did.

"What's wrong?" Gen asked and I looked at him.

"Nothing, don't worry about it." I said.

"There's obviously something on your mind. Tell me." Gen said and I sighed.

"My sister told my mum that I have a boyfriend. Which I don't. But because of that, I have to take my supposed boyfriend to my house for dinner this Friday. But since I don't have one, I don't know what to do." I said.

""I can help." Gen stated.

I gave him a confused look.

"You don't have a boyfriend. I'm the only one who knows you well enough. I'll just be your boyfriend for a night." Gen said.

"You'll do that. For me?" I asked.

"Sure. You've helped me out so this is fine. We're friends after all." Gen said.

That last sentence hurt.

"Yep, friends alright. Thanks Gen." I said, smiling as best as I could at him.

Don't worry." Gen said, patting my head.

We continued talking for a bit and soon went to class.

*Friday*

I was at home, getting everything ready for the dinner when Mark, one of my brothers, dragged me into another room.

"You know mums going to flip when she finds out you don't have a boyfriend. And dads going to flip cause you lied." Mark said.

"Don't worry. And technically, I didn't lie. Serene told mum that i had one." I said.

"Uh huh. Good luck. I ain't saving you." Mark said as we finished fixing up dinner and cleaning the house.

I went upstairs to get changed into a dress, which my mum insisted on me wearing.

I sighed as I fixed up my hair and walked downstairs when I heard the doorbell.

Phoenix, my older brother, had answered the door before I got to it.

"So, you're the guy who thinks they're worthy enough for my sister." I heard Phoenix say and I got to the door.

"Phoenix, shut up." I said, pushing him out of the way.

"Hey Gen." I said, smiling at him as I invited him inside.

"You look nice." Gen said and I smiled more.

"Thanks, it seemed you managed to fix up good." I said.

"I know how to dress Y/N." Gen said.

"Doesn't seem like it when you look like an emo half the time." I said.

"Shut up. Let's get this dinner going." Gen said, holding my hand.

I giggled a little and led him into the living room, where my family was present.

"Gen, this is my family. Family, this is Gen, my boyfriend." I said smiling at them.

"It's nice to meet you." Gen said, bowing slightly.

"Y/N, help me put everything out." Mum said and I nodded.

"Don't interrogate him please." I said and went into the kitchen with my mum.

"He seems like a nice guy." Mum said.

"Yeah. We've known each other for a while now." I said.

"Aw, how cute." Mum said and I nodded, not really thinking of a reply.

I looked in the living room and saw Mark talking to Gen.

Mark gave me a thumbs up and I sighed quietly.

At least someone was on my side.

Soon enough, everyone was seated and we were having dinner.

It went smoothly, with a few questions here and there from everyone.

It was what happened next that concerned me.

"So, Gen, what does your parents do for a living?" My dad asked.

I felt Gen tense up beside me and I grabbed his hand, squeezing it for a reassurance.

"Dad, that's..." I trailed off as Gen squeezed my hand and I stopped.

"I'm sorry Mr L/N, but both of my parents left me when I was younger. I provide for myself so I have no issues with it." Gen said as he looked at my dad.

The dinner was mostly silent after that and I kept my hand intertwined with Gen's throughout the dinner.

After it was done, Gen and I walked outside to talk without my family watching us.

"Sorry Gen, they can be a little eccentric." I said as I looked towards my house.

"Y/N, I know this may sound sudden, but I didn't only come to help you. I wanted to ask you out on a genuine date. And so I could be your actual boyfriend." Gen said as he looked away from me.

I smiled and grabbed his hand, staring at him.

"Gen, I would love that." I said.

Gen smiled at me and I gave him a kiss on his cheek.

"You might wanna leave now before my family kills you." I said as I let go of his hand and walked back inside.

I saw Gen walk away before I heard Phoenix yell at Mark to let him go.

I sighed as I went up to them.

Maybe some misunderstandings were good.
