Pragya stood by the door of the hospital room, looking at Abhi, both of them communicating with each other with their eyes. Both were unsure about what was going to happen next. Pragya took the first step, now fully inside the room, the door closing behind her. She looked away from Abhi and towards her daughter.Or rather the back of her head. Pragya took a slow step towards an unconscious Riya, then another, and another, until she was standing right next to her bed. Pragya reached out a shaky hand to cup the back of her daughter's head, choking back a sob, and lightly stroking Riya's hair.
Abhi watched this interaction quietly. He didn't know what to do. He had vowed to never let Pragya meet Riya. But even he was not heartless enough to take a child away from a worried mother. He was going to let whatever was happening, happen.
"She's okay, just some minor injuries, she'll get better soon. She's sleeping right now." Abhi told Pragya in a hushed voice to calm her when he saw that Pragya had begun crying.
Pragya breathed a sigh of relief, giving a teary smile to the back of her daughter's head, still stroking her hair.
However that smile quickly fell in a matter of minutes and as Pragya was finally about to see that her daughter was none other than Riya Mehra, the girl she taught math to, the girl she cared about, and the girl she felt a strong bond with. Pragya turned around to face the other way, taking her hand off Riya's head.
"I can't." Was the only thing Pragya said in a hollow voice, sprinting out of the room, with hot and heavy tears streaming down her face.
