As Alia was traveling through the hallways of the Mehra mansion looking for Aryan, the light coming from Purab's study room caught Alia's attention and she entered the room.
"Your son is hiding from me and I can't find him anywhere." Alia told Purab, who was looking at a photo frame on his desk, sitting on a chair behind his desk.
"So he's only my son when he upsets you?" Purab said looking up at Alia, giving a small smile, but Alia could tell from his misty eyes that he had been crying.
"I didn't realize that someone was cutting onions in here, people usually do that in the kitchen." Alia said jokingly, to get Purab to laugh.
"No onions here, just me and my stupid emotions." Purab said with a bitter short laugh.
"Emotions are never stupid, you taught me that." Alia said coming next to Purab, sitting in one of the chairs in front of Purab's desk, and grabbing the photo frame he was previously looking at.
"Don't lose hope Purab, we will find him one day." Alia said reassuring Purab and herself, now looking at the photo frame herself, running her hand over the picture inside it.
"When Alia?! When?! Tell me when I will find my son?! When will I find my Sunny?! It's been 9 years, he ran away when he was 14, and I still can't find him!" Purab said yelling at Alia, releasing his anger on her. He realized what he was doing, he looked at Alia, and let out a defeated sigh.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to yell at you." Purab said now much calmer. "I'm just angry, angry at myself for not being a good father. For not knowing where my son is, for not knowing how he is, if he ate or not if he found somewhere to live if he's all alone in the world if he thinks I abandoned him. What kind of father am I Alia? Even after having all this money and power, I can't locate my own son. I must be the worst father in the world." Purab said with tears streaming down his face.
"If you are a bad father, then I must be a beyond horrible mother. Disha di made me promise that I would raise Sunny like my own son before she died. I broke that promise, I let Sunny run away. What kind of mother was I that I didn't notice Sunny's pain? How did I not notice that Sunny wanted to run away? Why wasn't I there to stop him? Sunny used to call me 'Alia mumma' after he lost his real mom, but I fulfilled no duties of a mother. I didn't see what he was going through, I didn't see his struggle. What kind of mother doesn't know when her child is suffering? I must truly be a horrible mother." Alia said as tears streamed down her face, one tear hitting the photo frame she was holding, which had a photo of none other than Sunny when he was little.
"No Alia don't say that, you are a wonderful mother. The way you care for Aryan and Riya only a mother could. You love Aryan with all your heart and treat Riya like you are the one who gave birth to her. When Riya asked about her mom, when Riya wondered where her mom was, you became her mom. You taught her how to do her makeup, how to dress, and how to talk to boys, only a mother could teach that to her daughter. And Aryan he may not listen to you, to begin with, but you never have to say the same thing twice, he always follows what you tell him even if he is a bit reluctant to do so. Both of the kids love you and your love them, there's no way that you are a bad mother, in fact, you're the greatest mom I know." Purab said with conviction.
"And likewise you're the best dad that I know, aside from Abhi bhai of course." Alia said jokingly.
"You are not only Aryan and Riya's role model but also their friend. Whenever Aryan likes a girl he comes to you first and then to me. Riya calls you 'dad 2.0' as a joke but she means every word of it. You treat Riya like your own daughter, you worry about her just as much as Abhi bhai does, if not more. In fact, you're madder at her for getting hurt than all of us are. You couldn't raise Sunny, so you try to be the best dad you can be to Aryan, you're at every graduation, every sports day, every award ceremony, you're there at every step. You're a wonderful dad." Alia said with conviction.
"Ah, I understand now, you were using reverse psychology." Purab said knowing that even if Alia said all of the things about herself being a bad mother to make a point, she had meant every single word.
"Yes, I was. Purab I know we don't have a 'normal' husband-wife relationship but we are friends. And as friends the least we could do is share each other's pain. So you're no longer allowed to suffer with these thoughts on your own. Now come downstairs to the party, it's about to end anyway, so you don't have to make any small talk. The kids are wondering where you are, and please forgive Riya already before she does something over the top to convince you, you know how bad Riya is at apologizing." Alia said smiling as she thought about Riya's attempts to apologize.
"But you know I'm not really mad at Riya anymore, I just don't want her to know yet, so she has to work harder to convince me, that way she'll never do something so stupid again." Purab informed Alia, to lighten the mood.
"Plus I want to see Riya embarrass herself while apologizing, it's cute." Purab said giving a real smile.
"You're horrible, you think of our niece's struggle as entertainment." Alia said smiling herself.
"What a match we are, right? You taught me how to be a drama queen and I taught you how to be a decent human being." Purab said jokingly.
"Oh please, you were always a drama queen, I had no hand in that." Alia said rolling her eyes.
"Hah, you said nothing about the decent human being part." Purab said calling Alia out.
"So, I agree I might have done some questionable things in the past." Alia said raising an eyebrow, all in good humor.
"Just questionable things? Purab said raising an eyebrow. Alia made an annoyed face, and Purab gave a small laugh at that. Hearing Purab laugh, Alia smiled.
"Come on, Aaloo, let's go down to the party." Purab said standing up and coming next to Alia.
"Don't you start with Aaloo again or I will start calling you Puru again and then you would have to explain to the kids how you got that nickname." Alia said jokingly.
"Okay, I won't call you that, don't get so serious." Purab said calming Alia.
"Once we go down, you're helping me find Aryan." Alia said linking their arms, as they walked down the hallway, making small talk along the way.
