The girl with mismatched eyes POV

"If you die out there..." I say, my eyes brimming with tears.

"I won't. I promise you."

"P-promise?"

Kal nods his head and wipes away my tears.
He rests his hand on my cheek and leans into a kiss.

It's salty from our tears, and it's filled with promises that I fear will never be fulfilled.

"Goodbye, Be'shmai." He whispers, and boards the ship.

I cover my mouth and choke out a sob.
I sink to my knees on the metal floor of the dock.
I can't escape the feeling that I won't see him again.

One month after Kal left

The phone rings in a cheery tone, and I race to pick it up.
"Hello? Aurora Gilwraeth here."

"Hey, Be'shmai..."

"KAL?!"

I hear him chuckle.

"Are you okay?"

"I'm well, and so is the refugee camp."

"Have the Unbroken attacked yet?"

My question is answered with the boom of an explosion and a yelled curse.
"They're back! I love you."

And the phone clicks.

"...Kal?" I whisper.

"No, no, NO!" I shout, and glass shatters around me, and my eye glows.

"No..."

Two months after Kal left

I knock on the door.
"Hello? Scar? Fin?"

I wrap my arms around myself, and look down at the ripped hoodie that I'm wearing.

"Hey, Aunty Auri's here!" Alexa screams.

I sweep her into my arms.
"How's my favourite girl?" I ask, and she giggles.

"Mummy said that I can finally skateboard like Aunty Cat!" She cries, delighted.

"Really?! That's so cool! Where is Mum? I need to see her."

"Come on! I'll show you!" I set her down and she leads me through her apartment.

She leads me to the kitchen, where Fin and Scar are laughing, attempting to make pancakes.

"Mummy! Daddy! Aunty Auri's here!" A delighted Alexa cries.

"Hey guys." I say, and Scar wraps me in a hug before the tears fall.

"Lex, go to your room." Fin says.

"But-"

"Now."

"What's wrong, Auri?" Scar asks.

"Just-" I break down crying.
"Oh god. I'm so worried about him. I haven't gotten a note or a call in a month and the last thing I heard about him was that he's under attack and-"
