•Mercy's point of view•

I climbed off the bus at the front of a beautiful building. There was a teacher out front who was trying to gather the newest arrivals, so I assumed she was gonna be my teacher.

I skipped towards her and stopped right in front of her, all four of my hands holding the straps of my backpack.

"Hello there, what's your name?" She asked me with wonder.

"I'm Mercy, nice to meet you." I held up one of my hands for her to shake. She shook it.

"I'm Ms. Simone, Mercy, I'm the kindergarten teacher here." She said, crouching down next to me.

"I'm in your class!" I excitedly exclaimed.

"That's right, I remember meeting your parents. I don't know how they managed to conceive you biologically, but I'm glad they did because I get to meet you." Ms. Simone laughed.

"Who else are we waiting for?" I asked after many minutes, startling her.

"I'm waiting for the orphanage bus. They've got a lot of young children right now." Ms. Simone replied, a clipboard appearing in her hand. "We're waiting for Damien, Oliver, Vanessa, and Calypso."

"Those are pretty names." I said as a bus pulled up and dropped off a massive group of children. Four children made their way to Ms. Simone and stayed there, their hands linked.

"Alright, class, let's go inside." Ms. Simone said. We all followed and she got us sat down at the desks she set up against each other.

A very shy-looking girl started to cry as Ms. Simone sat down, opening the first class of the year, causing my cheerful demeanor to crumble. I reached out for her hand, trying to comfort her.

"Hey, I'm Mercy." I said, holding her hand. "What's your name?"

"I-I'm Calypso." She replied as she sniffed. A soft smile appeared on her paled dark brown face as I brought her serotonin levels back to normal slowly so she didn't notice.

"Hi, Calypso." I laughed. She let out an almost silent, breathy giggle as she held my hand under the table.

"Hi, Mercy." Calypso said with a smile on her face.

"Wanna be friends?" I asked.

"Yes, please."

-----

"Dad! Pops! Louie! I'm home!" I called. "I brought a friend too!" I exclaimed. Calypso gripped my hand as Pops fell down the stairs on his way to the entryway. Dad watched Pops fall, looking unimpressed as Lou held onto Dad's back.

"Hello there. I'm Angel, Mercy's father." Pops said, holding out one of his hands to give Cal a high-five. My new friend put her hand against Pops's hand cautiously before pulling it away and stuffing it in her pocket.

Dad came down, putting Lou on the floor before greeting Calypso. Dad was more gentle to Cal than Pops was, but it was enough to make her laugh.

"Hello, my dear, I'm Alastor. I'm Mercy's mother. Say, wanna hear a joke about paper?" Dad asked, a wide grin on his face after shaking her hand.

"No, Dad, we don't." I said with a smile, knowing the answer.

"That's alright, it's tearable." Dad said with a dead face. Calypso processed it before giggling hysterically, causing Dad to laugh triumphantly.

Lou latched onto me, her tail wagging slightly.

"Hi, Louie." I smiled as I scratched her scalp slightly. "Happy to see me?"

"Yes." Lou replied. "What's your friend's name?"

"Her name is Calypso. She was crying in the desk next to mine today at school." I replied.

"Aw." Lou said sadly. "By the way, Jeff's upstairs, trying out more of the game he made with Fae."

"Ooh! Did he finish more of the game sequence and characters?" Mercy asked.

"Yep! Wanna see?" Lou asked. Calypso nodded, and I could feel a buzz of curiosity shoot up my arm as I gave a yes to Lou. We ran upstairs to the den to find Jeff on his computer with Fae next to him.

"Jeff!" I screeched, jumping on him. Calypso stayed behind at the stairs as Lou climbed up the back of the chair like Spiderman.

"Hey, kid! Are you here to see the most recent thing I've added to the game?" Jeff asked. I nodded so hard that Fae stopped my head.

"I could hear your brain hitting the sides of your skull. Please don't do that." Fae mumbled. Calypso tiptoed her way over, peeking at the screen. Jeff looked down at her and startled so hard he nearly hit Fae in the head with his jagged horn. Calypso broke into startled tears and backed away in fear.

"Holy shit, I'm sorry, gentle heart, don't cry, I just wasn't expecting you to be there." Jeff said, lifting Calypso into his lap and wiping her tears as he fussed over her.

"Oh, Calypso, it's okay, Jeff didn't mean to scare you. He's just...Jeff. He startles easily and everything." I said, holding her hand again.

"Calypso, huh? What a pretty name." Jeff said absentmindedly. "And where does Miss Calypso live?"

"The orphanage..." Calypso said softly in the tiniest letters possible.

"Oh, we can't have that. How do you feel about living here with Mercy and Fae and Alastor and Angel and Lou and I?" Jeff asked kindly.

"You would do that? But who would be my parents out of everyone here?" Calypso asked softly.

"I would do that. I think I would be the one fostering you with Fae, of course, because Fae is my fiancé." Jeff explained. "So...what do you say? Wanna try living with our insane family?"

"I need to get my stuff first, but I want to live here." Calypso decided, hugging onto Jeff. Jeff ruffled her short hair and turned her around in his lap before showing off what he's done in the past five years of making this game.
