Your relationship with Mai was kept a secret from her friends. She wasn't ashamed of you, she just knew that Azula would make fun of her for falling in love and Ty Lee would want to know every single detail about your relationship. She was much happier keeping it from them and she planned on keeping it that way until the two of you were married.
You had just come back from dealing with a bunch of idiots and you were in need of cuddling with Mai to make you forget about the terrible day that you had.
"(Nickname)? Are you home?"
You called out as you grabbed something to eat from their kitchen. After spending so much time at her house, you had practically considered it a second home. There's no answer so you make your way to her room to see if she was home.

They had been quiet when they heard you call for Mai. Azula couldn't help but laugh while Ty Lee started freaking out about the pet name. Ty Lee was excited to hear that Mai was dating someone.
"Mai! You're dating someone why didn't you tell me?"
"Well I...."
"(nickname)? I didn't think you would actually let someone call you that. I think you almost beat up my brother when he tried using a nickname on you."
"Shut up, Azula. I've heard the things that Ty Lee calls you so you can't tell me anything."
Knowing that they were going to start arguing, Ty Lee yells at the two of them to quiet down.
"Stop arguing. You guys are best friends! Azula, be happy that Mai found someone that she's comfortable with letting them call her...."
"(nickname)?"
Azula starts laughing again as she mentions the nickname again. Never in her life would she imagine that Mai would let someone call her such embarrassing nickname.
"Azula! Stop being mean to Mai or I'm withholding kisses until you apologize for being mean."
At the mention of being denied kisses, Azula quits laughing. Mai starts to laugh but quiets down when Ty Lee glares at her.

You arrive to find to find Mai with her friends.
"Princess Azula! I...."
You quickly bow to greet her and start to apologize for intruding.
"You can relax, Captain (l/n). We're not in the palace."
You only relax just a bit, unsure of how to act with her around.
"Right. I'm sorry. I didn't know that they were going to come over. I'll go."
Mai rolls her eyes as she motions for you to sit besides her.
"There's no sense in hiding our relationship now. (y/n), this is Azula and Ty Lee. Ty Lee and Azula, this is (y/n)."
You greet them with a small smile as Mai introduces you to them.
"So (y/n), why (nickname)?"
Azula couldn't help but ask, wanting to know the back story of the embarrassing nickname. Without hesitating, Mai grabbed her hidden knife and threw it at Azula.
It retaliation, Azula attacks her with a ball of fire. You attempt to get Mai to stop fighting Azula but she pays you no attention as she continues to attack and avoid Azula's attacks. Ty Lee's in the same position with no luck of stopping Azula.
"Lets let them tire themselves out. Its pointless wasting our energy with trying to stop them. Why don't we go out for dinner? Maybe you can tell me why you started calling her (nickname)"
You don't have much choice but to follow after her as she drags you out.

Night eventually falls and you're finally alone with Mai after spending the rest of your evening talking to Ty Lee about your relationship. You were comfortable in her arms, almost falling asleep from the way she was playing with your hair.
"You didn't tell her the backstory, right?"
"No, Mai. I kept dodging her question until she eventually stopped asking."
"Good. I would rather die than let them ever hear it. I'll kill you if you tell it, (y/n)."
You roll your eyes at her threat. You couldn't understand why she was so embarrassed about it. You thought it was cute.
