Your couldn't help but blush when the girl that had come with the Avatar had smiled at you. She was unlike anyone else that you had met. She was beautiful. Wanting to make her acquaintance, you asked to sit besides her to be able to talk to her.
"So, you're with the avatar? How cool is that?"
"Oh, uh well it's fine. It has its ups and downs."
You nod, not really caring for the avatar. You were much more interested in getting to know her.
"I'm (y/n), by the way."
"Katara."
"Katara, that's a..."
You hadn't realized until now that Katara was wearing a bethrothal necklace. How could you have been so stupid to not realize the necklace that she was wearing proudly.
"..pretty name."
"Is everything okay?"
You gave her a smile and nodded.
"Yeah, the food just didn't agree with me.'
With that new information, you just kept the conversation friendly. Not really wanting to mess with someone's fiancee.

You're patrolling the streets when you suddenly collide into someone, as you stand up and held whoever who had crashed into you. You soon realized that it was Katara and that she was crying.
"I hope I didn't hurt you too bad. I should've watched where I was going."
You said, hoping to get a smile out of her when you helped her stand. Katara gives you the smallest of smiles as she wipes away her tears.
"No, I'm sorry. It was my fault. I should've watched where I was going. I..I was just upset."
You take her hand, creating a small bench with the snow for the two of you to sit. Katara just looks at you in amazement over your little show of water bending.
"You can waterbend? Who thought you?"
"I did. Master Pakku kept refusing to teach me because I was a woman and so I figured that it would have to be up to me to learn everything. Without his help, I was able to learn quite a lot by befriending some of the soldiers. Eventually, I learned enough to be able to join the tribes army. Why do you ask?"
Katara looks down as she kicks at the snow. Upset that Master Pakku had been completely against the idea of teaching her.
"I tried to learn water bending with Aang but Master Pakku said that he didn't teach women. I thought I could convince him otherwise but he wouldn't budge. He said that women are just meant to be healers and nothing more."
You're of course, angry to hear this. You knew Master Pakku was a misogynist and it never bothered you but you hated how he upset Katara. You stand up, grabbing your spear before taking Katara's hand. You ignored the way her touch made the butterflies go wild, knowing that if you gave into that feeling it would cause problems.
"Where are we going?"
"I'm going to teach you the principles of how to waterbend, enough so that you can take Master Pakku and show him that you're worthy to be taught."
"I don't know if I want to be taught by someone that thinks women are lesser than him. Why can't you teach me?"
"I'd be honored to teach the Avatar's friend but I'm afraid that I don't know enough to be considered a master in the element."
"That's crazy. You leaned how to water bend without a master. That puts you leagues above Pakku."
You blushed at Katara's compliment.
"Well lets see how much I can teach you."
X
You had spent the entire day with Katara, teaching her everything you knew so that she could take Master Pakku. In your opinion, you knew that Katara didn't need him because of how powerful she was with just a few lessons but the two of you figured that it was time that someone put him in his place. You stood at the side with Aang and Sokka as you watched the two of them fight. You didn't doubt for a second that she could take him out but they stopped in the middle of the fight.
"My grandmother gave me this, I had no idea that you had given this to her."
You stopped hearing the rest of the conversation after hearing that statement. All this time, you had thought that she was meant to marry someone else when it was just an heirloom that had been handed to her by her grandmother.
"You know, my sister is single."
Sokka whispers to you as you watched Katara and Pakku continue to talk.
"What?"
Sokka gives you a look, letting you knew that he was aware of your crush on his sister.
"She's single, you're single. Most importantly, the two of you like each other."
"She likes me?"
"Mhm. Heard her talking to Princess Yue about it."
"Katara likes me."
You mumbled to yourself, saying it so that you knew that it was true. You were happy to just be friends with her but hearing that she was single and that she liked you, you had a chance.
X
You never had a chance to tell her that you liked her when the Fire Nation decided to attack the tribe.
"Katara! Please be careful!"
You yelled to her as she climbed on Appa to search for Aang. Katara quickly jumps off of Appa and runs to give you a kiss, making you blush brightly.
"Stay safe."
She whispers to you before she leaves. You wanted to join her to search for Aang but you had been tasked to protect Princess Yue.
"I knew the two of you had something going on. I think the two of you would make a cute couple."
You just didn't say anything, too focused at the movement to keep you and Princess Yue safe.

With the battle now over, Katara, Aang and Sokka were ready to head out in search for a Earth master.
"Will I get to see you again, Katara?"
Katara simply takes off her necklace and places it around your neck.
"I promise once Aang defeats the Fire Lord, I'll come back for you. Are you sure that you don't want to come with us. Aang and I could still use a master."
You shook your head and leaned in to kiss her.
"No, the tribe needs me. I'll wait for you, Katara. Please be careful."
She smiles and kisses you one last time.
"Stay safe and I promise to come back as soon as I can."
You watched and waved as they flew away on Appa. A tear sliding down your cheek as you watched her leave. You hated that the two of you would be apart for quite some time but you knew it was her destiny to help the Avatar restore the balance and who were you to get in the way of her destiny. Besides, she had given you her necklace and that meant more than promises. She will come back safe and sound.
