You weren't a fan. In fact, you hated coffee. You only drank it to keep yourself awake when you pulled an all nighter. Almost a week ago, you had pulled an all nighter and so you headed to the nearest coffee shop as soon as it opened. That's where you ended up meeting Mai, the gorgeous barista that had been making your coffee for the past week.
When your friends had learned about your crush, they made fun of you. Finding it silly that you kept ordering coffee when you didn't like it. Once the teasing settled down, they began to push you into asking her out. You refused at first but after much insistence, you broke down and agreed to do so.
"Good morning, Mai"
You give her a bright smile, hoping to get at least a smile from her but it doesn't work. From the couple of times that you've come to order your coffee, you came to the realization that Mai could be a little cold and didn't quite show any emotion.
"Morning. What can I get you?"
"Well unfortunately, I don't see you on the menu so I guess I'll just take a regular large coffee." No emotion, Mai just inputs your order and charges you for the drink. You should've known to not take any advice from your friends. None of them had girlfriends and that should've been a clear sign to let you know that their flirting methods did not work. "Uh, I love your top. It really brings out your eyes."
"It's part of the uniform. Anything else that I can get you?"
You wished for the Earth to open up and swallow you. You could feel the tips of your eyes turn red in embarrassment.
"Uh, no. That'll be all."
"Can I get your number?" You're quick to give it to her, thinking that she wanted it so she could text you later but you were soon disappointed to find that she was inputting it on the cash register. "That'll be $3.67."
You nod and take out a bill to cover the charge. She returns your change and you're quick to put it on the tip jar. As one last attempt to salvage whatever chance you had with her, you let her know she was free to call you at anytime.
"I'm free whenever so just give me a call or just send me a message."
"Company policy states that I cannot keep any personal customer information."
"Oh..."
You didn't know what else to say so you just quietly thanked her and headed back. You knew you weren't good at flirting but what little you had done should had let her know that you were interested in her. It was clear that Mai had no interest in you so you weren't going to bother her anymore. All you would do is grab your coffee and never return.
"(y/n)!"
Just as your name is called, you quickly grab your drink and rush out to meet up with your friends. Their mocking was going to be never-ending.

"So did you ask her out? What happened?" You set down your coffee and let your head fall on the table, not caring that it hurt. "Oh my god! You did it! You actually asked her out."
"What? How did you know?"
She looks at you, confused.
"What do you mean, how do I know? Her number is written down on your coffee cup."
"What?!" The noise is loud enough to grab everyone's attention. You let out a quiet apology and then quickly grab the coffee to find the number. "Oh my god, I did it. I actually got her number."
Your friend starts to laugh as she reads the message.
"You can't flirt but you're cute so I'll let it pass. Here's my number..."
"Hey! I tried! I did everything that you all thought me."
"Well it doesn't matter what you did. What matters is that you got her number."
You can't help but smile as you read the message again.
"You're right."
