Lin hated that she couldn't go with you on your next mission. The two of you had always gone together wherever you were needed but now she had a job that she just couldn't afford to leave even if her mother was the Chief of Police.
"Please be careful. I know you might be the Avatar but you could still get hurt."
"Lin, I'll be alright. I can handle myself."
"That's because I've always been there.'
You pout as she raises her voice at you. Lin takes a deep breath and lets her forehead rest against yours.
"I'm sorry. I just hate that I'm not going. I wish I could go."
"I know and I wish you could go too but you finally got the job and I'm not letting you get fired because you asked for days off when you just started."
"You two, break it up! You're the Avatar and you're an office, have some dignity."
Lin turned around to glare at her mother for ruining the moment.
"I know you're glaring at me, Lin. I'll put you on paperwork duty if you don't let her go in the next few seconds."
As she starts to countdown, you both hurry to say your goodbyes. When she finally says 1, you had already taken off to your ship.
"You really had to ruin the moment, mom."
"You're welcome. The poor girl was going to be late because you refused to let her go." Lin rolls her eyes and leaves her mother alone to head back to the station. "Twinkle-toes, you better keep my future daughter-in-law safe or I'll bother your spirit."
Toph whispered as an extra measure of keeping you safe.

Neither Beifong's could believe the news when they heard of what had happened. Someone from your team had ultimately betrayed that caused for you to get a life-threatening injury. Doctors called it a miracle when they brought you in after losing so much blood.
"I'm going to kill her when I get my hands on her."
"Don't be ridiculous, Lin. If I didn't kill anyone after they hurt my friends then you can control yourself."
"That's because they never hurt your partner! Did you not see that large scar in her back? The doctors said she would've died with how much blood she lost."
"..yeah. I heard what the doctors said, Lin. I'm blind but I'm not deaf."
Toph was still surprised about how you had managed to survive. If she didn't know better, it was like Aang had actually listened to her threat. The thought of him being scared in the Spirit World of her made her smile. She still got it.
"Sorry, mom."
"Yeah, yeah. Just stop yelling before she wakes up."

You woke up a couple of hours later to find Lin had fallen asleep on a chair with her head resting on your thigh. Knowing her body would hurt in the morning, you gently shook her awake.
"I'm up!"
Startled, Lin jumped up from her seat and got into her fighting stance. You couldn't help but laugh as she tried to register what was going on.
"At ease, Lin. Everything is okay."
"(y/n)!"
She is careful to hug you without hurting you. After a few seconds, Lin tries to pull back but you refuse to let her go.
"I didn't think I was going to see you again."
You whisper to her as you bury your face in her neck. Lin's heart breaks as she hears this. If only she had gone with you, none of this would've happened.
"It's okay, (y/n). What matters is that you're okay and that I'm never letting you go on your own."
"But Lin..."
"But nothing. You're not changing my mind."
You don't say anything else, simply just let yourself enjoy being in her arms again.
